The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a story about a wealthy man named Gatsby. Gatsby lives a luxuriant life in West Egg of New York. Gatsby’s wealth has an unknown secret because nobody seems to know where his wealth emerged from. Despite of having so much fortune, Gatsby’s true American dream has not been achieved. In the great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald develops Gatsby as a failed American dream to show the impossibility of the American dream in the 1920’s. First of all Fitzgerald embodies Gatsby as a failed American dream during the time period by presenting Gatsby as a person who achieves happiness and materialism with money. Gatsby wants to achieve his American dream, but at every step he has to face difficulties and obstacles along the way. Initially, Gatsby appears as a rich man whose secret to success is unknown. Gatsby tries to put forth that how his “unknown” hard work eventually paid off and how he was then able to buy all of this materialistic happiness. Gatsby tries to impress everyone about how it is possible to achieve fortune and success by the means of hard work and determination. He tries to exemplify how he got out of his hardships in his childhood and break the social barrier to eventually become what he is now. The one reason Gatsby throws the huge parties is because he wants to buy Daisy as he bought many of the material luxuries. Gatsby throws parties so that he can impress Daisy, the love of his life. Gatsby wants to reunite with Daisy, who he lost before setting off to World War I. Gatsby’s wealth shows the false side of him “absolutely real-have pages and everything” (50). He became wealthy to reunite with Daisy, and the only ways he thinks he can do it is by ostentatiously showing his money and wealth. This
