One of the most common questions from psychologists and economists alike is whether or not money can buy happiness; there is evidence to prove either side, but it is shown prominently that wealth has no effect on a person’s level of happiness. The article “When the Rich-Poor Gap Widens, ‘Gatsby’ Becomes a Guidebook” says, “This theory holds that the more unpleasant and risky a job is, the more it pays” (Frank). This shows that, though someone could be very wealthy, they could be doing a job that they do not like, and may not be happy. This is shown, in The Great Gatsby, by Gatsby’s extreme wealth, countered by his obvious loneliness. The article also states, “Gatsby’s unhappiness may be explained in part by the finding that those who focus

Similarly, a feeling of decay continues in the story and is evident through the use of the color grey. The most poignant example involves a place called the Valley of Ashes. According to Zhang, “Every grey thing in the Valley of Ashes makes people feel depressed, hopeless, and afflicted” (43). The author also uses the color blue in Jay Gatsby’s garden to illustrate his feelings of loneliness and unhappiness. Thus, the color blue consequently shows how convinced Gatsby remains of his own reality that Daisy will commit to a relationship. The unreal expectation leaves Gatsby oblivious to the possibility that the event will never come to fruition.…

A brilliant American author named Garrison Kellior once said, “I believe in looking reality straight in the eye and denying it”. Some individuals believe that in order to keep their happiness, they sometimes have to ignore everything that is obvious or real to the human eye. Sometimes having faith in things beyond the normal comprehension is greater than settling for what is known to be realistic. Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby is shown to be one of a few who possess this special quality by creating an entirely different image of himself and clinging to the hope of being reunited with the one he loves most despite what others believed. Through Gatsby’s optimism and hope, Fitzgerald illustrates his agreement that…

Many people say wealth is the key to measuring success; they are wrong. Success should be measured upon ones happiness, the friends one has and if their goals in life have been attained. It is like saying you can never buy happiness. The American dream is often considered being affluent, but once one becomes rich- if ever- that's all he ever gains and won't be truly happy or successful. This is confirmed time after time again in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and in other readings and movies; it has in all probability been proven in your own experiences also. Success is like a rubber-band ball where you keep building and building upon it in hopes to make it a truly grand item to boast.…

Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ and Gabriele Muccino’s 2006 film ‘The Pursuit Of Happyness’ both reveal that the American dream does not always reflect the ideals of the equality. In Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’, inequality in the dream is shown by the contrast between Nick and Gatsby. In Muccino’s ‘The Pursuit Of Happyness’, however, inequality is shown in the contrast between the main character Chris Gardener and his wife Linda.…

This quote shows how deep Gatsby’s love for Daisy actually was. Gatsby built a gorgeous house, not for the recognition, not for his pride, but so that he could be that much closer to his one true love. A theme throughout the book is “Gatsby’s Dream” which can correlate with the American Dream. The American Dream is the dream that when one comes to America, they can build themselves a new life in order to become successful and frugal. Gatsby built himself a life in New York in order to get Daisy back and develop a new life with her.…

Mood is like a bird, it is difficult to capture correctly, but it is beautiful. Authors have the ability to shape the mood of their novel any way they please; however, mood can be interpreted differently by whoever reads the book. F Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby, makes the mood clear to the reader through imagery, literary devices, and word choice; yet, Baz Luhrmann, the director of The Great Gatsby film, interpreted the mood in his own way. By using lighting, angles, and acting technique, Baz Luhrmann interpreted the tense and, later, dreamy mood of the tea scene correctly, but added a sad element that was not contained within the book. He also re-created the depressed and hopeless feeling from Gatsby's death and funeral…

Lewis Lapham stated that the “American faith in money easily surpasses the degrees of intensity achieved by other societies”. As time goes on, it has become apparent that “money means so much to us” but it is only paper and that in actuality it cannot bring happiness. In my opinion, Lewis Lapham’s take on the attitudes toward wealth in the United States are correct. Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and the rising rate of depression that is extremely apparent amongst the adolescent population both agree with Lapham’s opinions.…

Scott Fitzgerald, Nick, on the outside, may seem like a happy and fun guy, but on the inside, he is far from that. Because of that, we can understand how much the deaths actually affected the book and the effect that it had on Nick.…
