In the book Fitzgerald shows Gatsby’s desire to overcome the undesired past is by changing his name from James Gastby to Jay Gatsby. By changing his name to Great Gatsby it makes him think that it could hide part of his identity as what he was when he lived with his parents as a farmer. Fitzgerald shows this in the text when he states “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessfull farm people” (Fitzgerald 104). What happens when you came from a "unsuccessful family" and after all you became a wealthy man who seems like he born in a gold crib? Gatsby moving from the farm where he lived with his parents helped him feel better of being in area where newly rich settled show off their newly acquired wealth. Fitzgerald shows this in the text when he states, ““He come out to see me two years ago and bought me the house I live in now. Of course we was broke up when he run off from home, but I see now there was a reason for it. He knew he had a big future in front of him.
