The Great Gatsby Ocean Avenue Chapter 1 Analysis
“Ocean Avenue”- Yellowcard
“If I could find you now things would get better” In chapter one Gatsby keeps looking across the sound at the green light in the front of Daisy’s house. He is wistfully thinking about being with Daisy as he looks at the green light. Just from reading the chapter I can inference that the green light indicates Gatsby’s dream of having Daisy. In this song the boy talks about how if he was with his love” things would get better”. Both Gatsby and the boy in the song have the idea that if they find their love then everything else will fall into place. This shows how chapter one and this song are compatible with each other.

“Dirty Little Secrets”- All American Rejects
“Dirty little secret” In chapter two Myrtle comes into the picture and we learn a little bit about Tom. Myrtle’s sister Catherine tells Nick that both Myrtle and Tom do not love their spouses. We also learn that Tom would leave Daisy if she wasn’t Catholic. From this we can inference that Tom doesn’t want to leave Daisy but wants Myrtle to be his “Dirty little secret”. After Myrtle and Tom start fighting Myrtle starts to talk about Daisy. Tom doesn’t like this because he doesn’t want Myrtle to “be another regret”.

People come from all over to attend these parties invited or not. This song says “Go insane” it is talking about partying and going crazy. Everyone at Gatsby’s parties is drunk and are all over the place. I think this song relates to the idea very well and can be compared to such events.

“Never gonna be alone” –

Myrtle can be shown sympathy for a number of factors, again concerning Tom. Firstly Myrtle even though aware of Daisy, seems to almost believe that she may still have a relationship with Tom. This may be shown sympathy as Myrtle seems throughout the novel as if she has been misguided into believing that one day Tom may leave his wife for her, and that if she clings on and plays the waiting game, this one day shall happen for her, and she can live the glamorous life that Mr Wilson is unable to provide for her.…

For it were strange indeed, and not very creditable to us white-skins, if a little of our blood mixed with the African's, should, far from improving the latter's quality, have the sad effect of pouring vitriolic acid into black broth; improving the hue, perhaps, but not the wholesomeness.”…

Tom observes Daisy, “She walked close to Gatsby, touching his coat with her hand” (121) which Tom’s response is to “push the unfamiliar gears tentatively, and shot off into the oppressive heat, leaving them out of sight behind” (121). Again it seems as if Daisy is using Gatsby and trying to hurt Tom as he has hurt her in the past. During the trip into to town Tom stops at the gas station and learns that Wilson, Myrtle’s husband, found out that she has been having an affair with someone. Wilson remarks “I just go wised up to something funny the last two days, that’s why I want to get away. That’s why I been bothering you about the car” (124). Tom who seems to have a realization tells Wilson “I’ll let you have the car” with this statement it tells us that Tom is ending his affair. When the group goes up to the Plaza room they open the windows and hear the wedding music down below, Jordan remarks “Imagine marrying anybody in this heat!” (127) and Daisy responds “I was married in the middle of June” (127). In addition, the unique structure is evident in both “Chronicles of A death Foretold” and “The Great Gatsby”, but the use of structure was used to play the same purpose in both novel; and that is to demonstrate the chronology and its effect in justifying the death evident in both novels. In Chronicle of a death foretold the most prominent form of structure that was evident is narrative structure. The way in which the author divided the narrative structure of the plot and events is through 5 sections. The first section is the morning of Santiago Nasar’s Death, the second section is the historical aspect were the reader learns about the past of Bayardo San Roman and Angela Vicario, the third section is the morning of Santiago’s death which is…

The song “Yesterday” is definitely the best choice for the scene when Gatsby is killed while swimming in his pool. The song has a bleak tone which conveys the tragic moment of his death, as well as the sadness felt by Nick when he hears of what has happened. The song also accurately expressed what Gatsby would say if he could speak after his death. The song states, “ Oh, I believe in yesterday. Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be.There's a shadow hanging over me… I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday”(The Beatles). This is strikingly similar to how Gatsby felt when he was alive. He had once told Nick that he believed that he could repeat the past. Therefore, he would believe in yesterday. It is the song’s gloomy tune and…

In chapter 8, Fitzgerald uses Jay Gatsby as a symbol for the reality of the American Dream with his failure to achieve the goals he had been working towards on his time on West Egg. His first failure occurs at the start of chapter eight when Gatsby gets home after a night of waiting on Daisy. “’Nothing happened,’ he said wanly. ‘I waited, and about four o’clock she came to the window and stood there for a minute and then turned out the light’” (Fitzgerald 147). With this statement, Gatsby is telling Nick the reason for his late arrival home, which as we know, is because he was once again waiting for Daisy to choose him over Tom. This is a failure for Gatsby because once again, he cannot stop trying to get an answer from her whether she wants…

Gatsby’s wealth came from a desire to be rich, and this desire to be rich derived from his need for materialistic items and belongings. For example, Gatsby is known for having one of the most luxurious houses in his respected home town. This house represents more than just a fancy show for people to gawk at, it provides Gatsby with a sense of fulfillment and happiness. A new member of the Egg islands, named Nick Carraway, has moved next door to Jay Gatsby and describes his house as the following, “The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard… with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and marble swimming pool” (Fitzgerald 5). The owner of this house, Jay Gatsby, lives alone and only uses his house for…

The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is often referred to as the great American novel. The book’s immense symbolism and its many messages make The Great Gatsby a novel that has the ability to appeal to all who read it. Religion plays a key role in the book. For instance, religious beliefs in the 1920s influenced the main characters of the story in a significant way. The Valley of Ashes that is described in chapter two may also help to represent the moral dilapidation that the rich undergo in the 1920s. Lastly, Gatsby seems to represent Jesus in the novel, while T.J. Eckleburg represents God Himself and Wilson represents Judas. Overall, while there are many symbols in the Great Gatsby, religion is one that seems to come up…
