The Great Gatsby Personal Response
Personal Response
A man had been standing at the blank intersection for a while now wearing a brown worn-out shirt and baggy pants, not quite appealing to anyone but yet caught the attention of many. He was not moving, not even an inch, like something had grabbed on to him purposely making him immobile and blankly staring across the distance. The streets that had been walked on by million people a day looked empty, according to how his eyes viewed it, still and calm. It seems like nothing could make him move from his position except for by his own will. In the far distance there was a factory, where individuals work in order to provide the necessities for their family and nothing is different for this man. He stood there for a couple of minutes,

During his years in high school, he had gotten a fine job in the factory which paid more than almost double the amount of what an average high school student could earn. He remembered bragging to his friends about the money he had earned and officially decided to earn more instead of focusing in school and also pursuing his dream. He worked from the moment he woke up, to when the sun began to set, making him a horrible student in school, but someone that earned a large sum, but only to the extent of his high school years. Since his clock had completely shifted, his time to write began to decrease every day, sometimes one word per day or even worse, none at all. His only thought was that his old desire could wait and without him knowing, his new desire became the accumulation of wealth. His excuse was always that after he had the money to support himself, he would continue to write but he didn’t exactly realize how much time he had wasted in his …show more content…
His friends all went to universities or college to pursue their own desires but he couldn’t since school was never something he had valued. After some time, he realized that the factory he now works in, the wages was never high. Yes, it was high compared to a high school student, but not that he’s an adult, the wages in his mind went lower and lower. His friends had jobs that earned much more but to him, that was the only path he could’ve taken because that’s all he had ever known. But he was happy at that time, because again, that was all he had known during that time, to make money, to make himself rich. If he were to repeat his life again, this situation will probably not change. In his mind, he was content with his new desire, but that brought new consequences that he wouldn’t have if he chose to do what the others did, he had brought the consequences on

High parental expectations: were put on him: “the ambition to succeed was instilled in me.” Having idealised his family (a “fine” one), he followed what they told and showed him, and from early age, worked in all his spare time, after school and during vacations as he took on his parents’ motto, “Keep busy; always have something constructive to do.” This continued in adult age when he kept busy and endeavouring to go up the ladder of professional success. Through his hard working he became director of a large bank. As his family was quite community-oriented, so was he, and he also became director of several civic organisations.…

    A&P John Updike - Essay 2

    • 5 Pages

Almost everyone has ambitions and dreams that they want to attain sometime during their lifetime. One shared goal is making more money, but wanting and desiring something are very different things. While wanting to make more money is a modest goal, the real desire behind it is more security and freedom. The power of desire speaks to peoples' subconscious, influences their actions, and ultimately directs their lives, as is used by John Updike as a theme in his short story A&P. The narrator, Sammy, decides to quit his tedious job because he wanted a better life for himself, although initially it was only to impress a girl. In the short story A&P, John Updike uses the theme the power of desire to express a young man's (accidental) realization of his greater goals in life.…

As it was for generations within his family he had always been told that money could buy happiness and that it should be saved and invested in order to make the most out of it. It was from there on that he followed those guidelines and realized much later on in his life, around the age of 55, that money wasn’t the key to living happily. His home life had become rather strained as it was only him and his wife since his kids were already moved out. Work had been keeping him bogged down while his wife sat home alone watching infomercials. They had a brief disagreement one night and decided that the way they were going wasn’t working out and something needed to change. On a whim he suggested that he take some time off and they go see a concert. Much to his wife’s surprise at the left field suggestion she agreed and the next week they went to see their first concert. As they walked in there was a distinct feeling of unease as it was a subject neither one had studied past their college education. Once they sat down and the music began to pour forth they were both taken aback, especially Rod, and were drawn to the mysterious sensation cast upon them. With that experience he decided from then on that he would become a sponsor of the symphony to keep it alive and prosperous to recreate the feeling of euphoria that he felt during that first performance. His…

In the novel The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan is possibly the most mysterious and perhaps disappointing character. She captures the hearts of both Tom Buchanan, her unfaithful, though providing husband and Jay Gatsby, her lover from five years prior. Many disastrous incidents occurred in all aspects of the novel. It would be easy to blame all of them on Tom, because she was cheating on Daisy, or even Gatsby, because he lured Daisy in with his elaborate house and fancy shirts. But, all of the unfortunate events that occurred throughout the novel were undoubtedly and entirely, Daisy Buchanan’s fault. First, she met Gatsby and promised to wait for him until he got back from the war, but met and married Tom anyway. She cheated on Tom with Gatsby, and made Nick to keep secrets from people. She then killed Myrtle with Gatsby’s car, which caused George Wilson, Myrtle’s seemingly deranged husband, to kill Gatsby and subsequently, himself. Therefore, all of the deplorable occurrences that transpired through the duration of the novel were solely Mrs. Daisy Buchanan’s fault.…

Every individual has his own style, his own way of presenting himself on and off the field (Sachin Tendulkar ). Likewise, F. Scott Fitzgerald has his own unique way which he uses in his works that differentiates him from all the other authors. Furthermore, in the Great Gatsby, a historical fictional novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald paints a picture of a lifestyle and a decade that is both fascinating and horrific which to most people, is evocative and makes them look at their way of life in a different way. His style, especially in the great Gatsby is described as “lushly evocative” because his works have a brilliant understanding of lives that are corrupted by greed and are incredibly sad and unfulfilled.…

Personality traits allow a writer to create vivid images of his characters. These traits are shown through actions because they are exhibited through behaviors. According to Physcology.about.com, “the trait theory suggest that individual personalities are composed of broad dispositions such as central and secondary traits” (Par. 5).Each character in a literacy work has a unique trait; however, multiple traits may occur more than just a single trait. Nick’s traits vary which are displayed. For example, Nick’s humble traits symbolize sincere respect, apprehensive assertiveness, and self-effacing demeanor showing maturity within The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

Jay Gatsby’s journey to reunite with his past love Daisy is one of great tragedy and romance. Fitzgerald’s use of past, present, and future paints the picture of truly how tragic this five-year journey was for Gatsby. Gatsby loses the ability to live in the present because of his intense fixation on the past and his dreams of the future. Because of this inability, it becomes clear rather quickly that a relationship with Daisy is an unreachable goal.…

One of the basic tenets of life is that greater opportunities will appear to individuals that actively pursue and know how to recognize them. Since the majority of us do not have the luxury of being born into wealth or power, the choices that we make ultimately shape our successes in life. Adam Carolla begins by using examples to highlight the concepts of consistency and residual income. He explains that it is easier and more useful to understand how to sell something and continue selling it again and again as opposed to figuring out how to simply make a large amount of money. As a student that had performed poorly in high school, he worked a variety of jobs including carpet cleaner and boxing trainer before entering the media industry. Lacking a career support system, Carolla explains that it took him a long time to discover his path. The significance that he takes away from this lesson is the importance of “shooting for the stars” and finding a job that you can enjoy doing as a (pure) living.…
