Chapter 1
Title: Revelation of personalities
Quote: "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." (Chapter 1 pg. 1)
In these days, some societies judge people based on their class, if you are poor and act differently then they see you below them and if you are rich than you are more important and well recognized. In my opinion I agree with this that the author is saying, we all tend to judge and criticize people on how they dress or how they look, I have even found myself doing that and that is something worthy of being ashamed of. We shouldn’t judge people on their looks or their …show more content…
class, maybe they don’t have the same “advantages” that you have and that should not make them less. Criticizing has become a habit and something normal and all for the wrong reasons so we should take the advice given to the author by his father and think twice before criticizing or judging anyone.
Chapter 2
Title: depiction of the great affair
Quote: "There was a valley of ashes - a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens." Chapter 2, pg. 23
We are usually used to hearing how society affects people and the consequences this affection brings but we hardly ever hear how people’s actions and way of living affect society.
Society is a reflection of the people living in it and I believe that in the great Gatsby “the valley of ashes” represents a wasted society that will end up in destruction. The characters in this novel are people who lack of ethics and moral codes, total depravation. We see unfaithfulness, lies, selfishness, idleness, and a doomed society. I think the author is trying to show how the 1920s era really was, affairs were something normal, fights and lies were common and it ended in total destruction just like the novel with the death of …show more content…
Gatsby.
Chapter 3
Title: Old sport
Quote: "Gatsby's smile had a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life, It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself"(chapter 2,pag48).
This quote relates not only to me but also to people in general.
When we have a problem or we are feeling down we tend to look for comfort in a person like Gatsby, one who will understand you, believe you and tell you exactly what you want to hear. When a person tells you the opposite of what you believe, in a moment that you need reassurance this vexes you, therefore the only solution is to find someone who is on your side. I believe this is something that we tend to do but is not healthy because maybe you are the one that is wrong and you just need someone to tell you, to open your eyes to the truth and a person like Gatsby is not one who would do
that.
Chapter 4
Title: Party over here, party everywhere.
Quote: "A phrase began to beat in my ears with a sort of heady excitement. "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired."
Life has many different directions that lead you to countless places. This quote relates not only to me but also to people in general. In life if you are not being pursued into something then you are maybe pursuing someone into doing something. We are always busy trying to achieve goals and pursue our dreams and if not we are always running away from our nightmares. The catch to this is that there are different types of people: the ones who cant make their own decisions therefore need help (like me), there are the people helping those insecure ones by pursuing them into achieving what they want and last but not least the ones who are always busy or way to tired to go on.
Chapter 5
Title: Renewing
Quote: 'It makes me sad because I've never seen such - such beautiful shirts before.'"
This quote really stood out to me for various reasons. First of all we don’t really know what the author is trying to tell us with this. I believe this shows part of who daisy really is. Daisy sais that she is sad because she has never seen such beautiful shirts before, so I believe she is comparing Gatsby’s success to Toms success, therefore showing how materialistic she is. On the other hand I relate to her in a way because in the real world when girls try to decide between two guys, we tend to compare who is better, maybe not in a materialistic way like daisy but in a simple comparing way.
Chapter 6
Title: Trough new eyes
Quote: "It is invariably saddening to look through new eyes at things upon which you have expended your own powers of adjustment." Chapter 6
I believe this is a very realistic quote that everyone relates to. It basically shows how sometimes in life you work so hard to change something, you give it your best but all that work turns out a complete waste. Sometimes you really believe that change is what you need and we get blinded with everything that comes in the way but when that blindfold is taken off, we see everything with a fresh and real perspective; we realize that change was exactly what we didn’t need. This is a process that we all go through in life.
Chapter 7
Title: Anything for love
Quote: "He spoke as if Daisy’s reaction was the only thing that mattered."
In this chapter we see a beautiful side of Gatsby but also a dark one. On the bright side, Gatsby is concerned with daisy’s feelings because she just killed a woman, he makes sure that she is fine and that she gets some rest. On the dark side he ignores the fact that there is a death involved. Something that really shocked me was how he decided to take the blame. All of this shows how in real life, love blinds you; it makes you forget all the bad things and only see the bright side of things. We tend to get so caught up in the romance that we ignore what could be the consequences of our actions.
Chapter 8
Title: As I lay in the pool
Quote: God knows what you've been doing, everything you've been doing. You may fool me, but you can't fool God!'’(Chapter 8)
This quote is very easy to relate to. Those of us who have been raised in a Christian environment our whole life’s, have been taught what is right from wrong and how to do things in a way that will glorify god. Even though we know all of this we tend to do things behind peoples backs thinking that we will not get caught but the when we stop and think god know everything we do and how we do it and he takes care of bringing it all to the light, so the fact that he is always watching is something that we tend to forget that shouldn’t be forgotten.
Chapter 9
Title: Live like you were dying
Quote: "tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...And one fine morning----- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." (Chapter 9)
Gatsby believed that he could achieve his dream, every day he though that tomorrow he would get it, he went on and on wit that but what he didn’t understand was that his dream was in the past. We tend to do that; we tend to think that we can re-live the past when that is something impossible. When we really want something it is really hard to let go, just like it was for Gatsby, we think that the next day we can get it but we cant because its in our past. We have to always be with open eyes and face the truth because in the end the only one left to suffer is oneself.
