The Great Gatsby Time Analysis
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby time is very precious and important. Chapter six Jay Gatsby invited his love Daisy and her husband to one of his parties. Gatsby wanted her to love everything about it but he had a feeling she didn’t. At the end of the chapter we see a conversation between Nick and Gatsby, he explains to Nick how he wants Daisy to tell Tom she never loved him and for her to go off with how they were going to five years ago. Fitzgerald uses time as a theme to alter the way love is perceived.

Time is a main theme in The Great Gatsby and is brought up a lot when Gatsby talks about Daisy and their past together. A significant place where the theme of time is brought is when Nick says the Gatsby “You can’t repeat the past.”(page 110) and Gatsby’s response to him is “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!”(page 110). Gatsby is stuck in this mindset that he can change everything back to how it used to be with him and Daisy he even says to Nick “I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before.”(page 110). Nick even says that Gatsby’s life had been disordered and confused since he hasn’t

To Gatsby time is such an important factor to him because he has none of it to waste. When he is talking to Nick about Daisy we get that time is very important because he wasted it when he first tried to be with Daisy. Now all he thinks about is the time he has left and how he needs Daisy before everything is too late. But you can’t repeat what you had in the and Gatsby is stuck in the past and not living in the present. Time is an important theme of The Great Gatsby because is shows how people's views can change so much depending on time. Gatsby vision of love for Daisy is affected by this time because he's so focused on how she was and things were with them in the past. He’s not thinking about what's really going on with her in her life and who’s become since they first were

Fitzgerald uses the symbolism of the “defunct mantelpiece clock” to relieve the tension of Gatsby and Daisy’s first meeting and also to demonstrate how Gatsby wants to be able to turn back the time with Daisy. The word “defunct” used to describe the clock shows how it is impossible for Gatsby to have the same relationship he had with Daisy five years ago, now. The clock also highlights how nervous Gatsby is because he is clumsy in knocking the clock over and then catches it “with trembling fingers”. This contrasts with Gatsby’s usually polished, confident persona, showing how he has true feelings for Daisy and he knows that he cannot win Daisy over with his wealth.…

The thing that I find so unique about Gatsby “love” for Daisy is that he never gives it up. In the end of the book it's clear that Daisy is not going to run away with Gatsby. He never gives up hope. And for what it seems Daisy is literally that most important thing is his life. Gatsby took the blame for Daisy. This is when Gatsby is telling Nick what had happened “was daisy driving?” “Yes,” he said after a moment but of course i'll say I was” (Fitzgerald 150).…

The theme that is portrayed throughout The Great Gatsby would be a deviant sense of love. Even though Tom and Daisy may seem somewhat loyal and affectionate towards each other in the beginning, their true feelings begin to show as the novel develops. As we see with their unfaithfulness to each other, they are clearly not in love. Tom begins seeing Myrtle, George’s wife, and Daisy has an affair with Gatsby, her former lover. Ever since Gatsby had laid eyes on Daisy, he’d wanted to be with her which is why he, “bought that house so that Daisy would just be across the bay.” (Fitzgerald.78) It’s largely evident that Gatsby is in love, but with what? With Daisy? Or with a dream of Daisy? He’s always had fantasies about loving Daisy, but now that…

Scott Fitzgerald of “The Great Gatsby”, gives his readers signs on why Gatsby will not reach fail and lost his mind in a fantasy world, insisting himself to relive the past life with his former love Daisy. Even though Gatsby is blinded by his past, he is able to gain the American Dream, to obtain the wealth and power to win Daisy’s heart back. Although he has forgotten, it has been five years since he has reunited with Daisy. When Nick returns from his mini reunion with Daisy and Tom, he notices that his secretive neighbor, Gatsby, “stretche[s] out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way,” and as Nick glances at what Gatsby is looking at, “distinguish[es] nothing except a single green light” that is “minute and far [a]way” (20-21). Gatsby reaches out so hard for something he can never get. This mysterious green light, Daisy, is a part of Gatsby’s American Dream, but she has already moved on, while Gatsby is stuck in the past, thinking about what he could have done with her. Speaking of time, when Nick invites Daisy for lunch unknowingly with Gatsby, Gatsby knocks over Nick’s clock because he is extremely nervous about meeting Daisy after such a long time. As Gatsby begins his conversation, a slight pause takes place, interrupted by the “clock [that] took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of [Gatsby’s] head” (86). This clock represents time and the overwhelming role it plays in Gatsby’s life. Moreover, Gatsby dropping the clock symbolizes his realization that time is gone and he does not have the ability to go back and retrieve it, similar to how all three of them, Nick, Gatsby, and Daisy, just assumed that the clock smashed into thousands of pieces. Consequently, Gatsby fails to realize the total absence of his dream and never ends up getting the girl, his ultimate…

After Gatsby tells Nick that Daisy didn’t have much fun at his party Nick replies, “You can’t repeat the past,” which Gatsby confidently replies with, “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” (110). This exchange is evidence that Gatsby is living in the past and is unable to see that his past has become a fantasy. At this point Gatsby has blown his past image of Daisy into something much larger and more magnificent than she is able to be in reality. Gatsby has twisted his idea of the past so much that he has gained extremely high expectations for his future. Nick’s comment is foreshadowing that Gatsby’s dream to be with Daisy will never be lived out. Along with this, Gatsby’s reply foreshadows his heartbreak and foolish feeling he suffers after realizing that Daisy has left him for…

The song “Yesterday” is definitely the best choice for the scene when Gatsby is killed while swimming in his pool. The song has a bleak tone which conveys the tragic moment of his death, as well as the sadness felt by Nick when he hears of what has happened. The song also accurately expressed what Gatsby would say if he could speak after his death. The song states, “ Oh, I believe in yesterday. Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be.There's a shadow hanging over me… I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday”(The Beatles). This is strikingly similar to how Gatsby felt when he was alive. He had once told Nick that he believed that he could repeat the past. Therefore, he would believe in yesterday. It is the song’s gloomy tune and…

In the novel, The Great Gatsby, the main character, Jay Gatsby, attempts to recapture his past with his once “love of his life”: Daisy Buchanan. In this novel, the idea of time is described in multiple aspects. Time, one would say, is ever flowing like a wave: rising into form, proceeding to crashing into a white fizzing foam, not stopping for anything in its path. Like a wave, time has many stages like the past, present, and future. As people we are told to live in the moment and dwell in the present as we prepare for what lies ahead: our hopes and dreams in the future. However when one resides to live in the past, it puts up a barrier for the future, and that is what happens to Jay Gatsby. On all accounts in the story, Gatsby merely wastes the time in his life pursuing to live a dream, and it was the…

He is stuck relieving how he wished his life had unfolded. Nick tells Gatsby that the past cannot be repeated, but Gatsby responds with “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can (Fitzgerald 116). A plan has been created in his mind that Daisy and him can back track five years and be the same exact people they were. Everything Gatsby has done in the last five years has been to get Daisy back in his arms. Gatsby also wants Daisy to admit that she has never loved Tom, but Daisy cannot bring herself to do that: “Oh you want too much! I love you now-isn’t that enough?” (Fitzgerald 139-140). In Gatsby’s ideal world, the last five years would be erased, and they would get married as if nothing changed between the, over the last few years. The image of Daisy in Jay Gatsby’s head is unattainable for her to live up to. He has placed her on a pedestal, and it is impossible for her to live up to his vision. Jay Gatsby expects too much from Daisy, and a great man does not set unrealistic expectations of…

Gatsby and Daisy are never able to be together because of the time they lost. Gatsby’s plan to meet up with Daisy takes five years, because they have parted ways and met other people. One part of Gatsby’s plan to meet up with Daisy is moving into a house close to Daisy in hopes that they would run into each other somewhere. Another step is throwing huge parties every weekend expecting Daisy “to wander into one of his parties, some night” (Fitzgerald 79). Gatsby is trying to recreate his past by…

During this portion of the story, which involves the mantle clock, Gatsby is at Nick’s house for his first meeting with Daisy since they last met five years ago. The mantle clock sits upon the ledge above the fireplace looking over the reunion of the two. “His head leaned back so far that it rested against the face of a defunct mantelpiece clock, and from this position his distraught eyes stared at Daisy” (Fitzgerald 91). As Gatsby stares at Daisy he is remembering the past they shared and the love they felt. In order to find happiness Gatsby knows he must make the past reoccur. His entire “pursuit of happiness” revolves around this idea, which is what the mantle clock symbolizes entirely. Gatsby becomes lost in his thought and his head drifts heavier and heavier upon the clock. Gatsby and Daisy begin to talk and Gatsby says to Daisy “we’ve met before”. “The clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers and set it back in place” (Fitzgerald 91). The fact that the clock falls provides us with some foreshadowing. We see through this event that Gatsby will be unsuccessful in turning back time and never find true…

When F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the story “The Great Gatsby”, he never would have thought that it would generate such a debate over whether it is a love story, or a story on the failure of the American dream. Critics on both sides of the debate use specific quotes from the story to argue their points. My stance of the story is that it is a love story. The quote that can be used to argue that it is a love story is this, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay”, (83; ch.4).…
