Dear Diary, I believe that there comes a time in every young woman’s life in which they believe they have fallen in love. For a long time I thought this was something that would just not happen to me, that was until I met him. He introduced himself as Jay Gatsby, a military officer in World War I. I must say he was very alluring and intriguing. We talked, just talked. It was nice, to just talk about life with someone, a stranger almost. I was very unsure of him at first; wanting him to prove to me that he was worth any of my time. Gatsby ended up telling me of his life and to say the least I was extremely impressed with his accomplishments. We got along well and I began to actually like him, a lot, which scared me considering he was still a stranger. The thought of him still being a stranger crossed my mind as I asked if he would like to come back to my house. When we arrived, and as I showed him around, you could tell he was very enthralled by my house. We, well, became very close that night, closer than I thought I would ever be with him. We parted our ways that night, but I found myself still thinking of him even after he left. He convinced me he could take care of me and that he had a stable life, which is exactly what I am looking for. I thought it was quite a coincidence when we met again two days later. Seeing him, kissing him, and being with him made me feel something I haven’t felt before. I soon realized I was falling for him, this man, and fast. Sadly, he told me he was only stationed here, in Louisville, for a short time and that he was being deployed for war. I promised to write and wait for him. I truly believe that he might be the one and I will wait for him, Jay Gatsby, because I think I do love him. The next time I write I hope to have followed through with this, but who knows what can happen in time. Hopefully soon, Daisy

Dear Diary, It has been a while since I have written in you, in this time a lot has changed. I re-read the last entry I had written in this, which brought back many memories. However, I just thought it would be the right thing to say that I am not, nor did I end up with Gatsby. This, after reading the last entry, upset me a little. I almost feel like I let my younger self down, but I’m happy where I am at now in my life. I guess I should start with where it ended. So, Gatsby had left to fight in the war and I did exactly what I promised. I waited, but how long can you wait for someone that you don’t know will even come back. It came to a point where I had to move on with my life. Which is when I met my now husband, Tom Buchanan. He was smart, handsome, wealthy, and he showed that he could take care of me. I started to fall in love, and soon Gatsby was a distant memory. I ended up getting married to Tom, and now we have a daughter named Pammy. Motherhood is…something. I love my daughter, but mothering is not my cup of tea. However, I feel as though I am in a solid place in my life, it has its bumps recently. Tom really hasn’t been “loyal” lately. I have my suspicions. I have been thinking a lot though about Gatsby…what if I did wait for him? Summer 1922
Dear Diary, Since I have found you again, I find myself fighting the urge to write in you. But, I feel as though can let my true feelings about everything on this paper. So, I will. It hasn’t been too long since I had last written, but much has happened. My cousin Nick Caraway had moved to town, which is when everything began to change. Tom has been acting very sneaky and strange lately. I suspect he has been seeing another woman, but as for now I’m leaving it alone. Probably the most significant thing that has occurred is the fact that I had met with Gatsby again. I had thought it was going to just be tea with Nick when he appeared. He was jittery, as was I, and nervous. So nervous he knocked a clock over, apologizing profusely. We talked and I found myself falling again. That was until after when Gatsby had begun to fight with Tom. As the quarrel continued about my love and their love, I found myself leaning toward Tom. Though I had felt like I was falling for Gatsby just earlier that afternoon, I just felt like Tom was whom I should be with. Tom ended up sending me with Gatsby, though he knew he had won the argument. He was trying to prove a point, and it flustered me to the point that as I was driving I hit someone...a woman. I sped home, and on the way Gatsby had assured me not to worry that everything would be taken care of, but that wasn’t the case. One thing led to another, and Gatsby was shot and killed because of my deed. Tom and I have left; we didn’t stay to witness the aftermath. It was better that we left, I feel better now that we are gone. Though, there are some days where I feel the slightest guilt in the fact Gatsby had died for me. It’s funny how life works out.

In Chapter 5, Daisy and Gatsby are reunited in Nick’s house and then Gatsby shows Daisy around his house. Gatsby attempts to reward Nick with money for helping bring him and Daisy together again, “Well, this would interest you. It wouldn’t take up much of your time but you might pick up a nice bit of money.” This shows how Gatsby is not used to people being hospitable towards him without wanting anything in return. It also demonstrates how Gatsby thinks he has to buy Nick’s loyalty in the hope that by bribing Nick with money, he won’t tell Tom about his meeting with Daisy. Nick refuses claiming, “I’ve got my hands full,” This reveals that Nick is very class conscious as he thinks he is above receiving money for something he has done. It also shows that he is aware of the corrupt criminal world that Gatsby is involved in because he doesn’t want to take the chance of getting involved in the same world as Gatsby.…

The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is often referred to as the great American novel. The book’s immense symbolism and its many messages make The Great Gatsby a novel that has the ability to appeal to all who read it. Religion plays a key role in the book. For instance, religious beliefs in the 1920s influenced the main characters of the story in a significant way. The Valley of Ashes that is described in chapter two may also help to represent the moral dilapidation that the rich undergo in the 1920s. Lastly, Gatsby seems to represent Jesus in the novel, while T.J. Eckleburg represents God Himself and Wilson represents Judas. Overall, while there are many symbols in the Great Gatsby, religion is one that seems to come up…

In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby’s life is seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway. He had recently moved to West Egg, a peninsula off of Long Island. Next door lived an eccentric wealthy man named Jay Gatsby. Across the bay, his cousin Daisy lived with her husband in East Egg. Five years ago Daisy and Gatsby had met in her hometown and fell in love briefly before he had to serve in the war. With the arrival of Nick the two were reacquainted. Though many claim that The Great Gatsby was a tragic love story, it was actually a representation of the unattainable american dream. In the novel F Scott Fitzgerald uses Daisy as a metaphor of what Gatsby could never have and what he needed to complete his dream through the use of symbolism and diction.…

After many years of working hard and learning in school, students tend to become tired and stressed, seeking a way to escape it all. As J. Maarten Troost wrote, “Escapism, we are led to believe, is evidence of a deficiency in character, a certain failure of temperament, and like so many -isms, it is to be strenuously avoided. 'How do you expect to get ahead?' people ask. But the question altogether misses the point. The escapist doesn't want to get ahead. He simply wants to get away.” (Troost)…
