The Great Melting Pot

A melting pot refers to the idea that there are multiple races in America. Some people argue that there is or may not be a melting pot in America due to the perception of American actions. After reading and listening to both sides of the argument and explanations as to if America is or is not a melting pot, I’ve came to the conclusion that America is not a melting pot. Instead we are more of a of salad. Heres why!

Although America is diverse, America is not a melting pot. If it is a melting pot, America would not exclude others from coming into America . Richard Rodriguez clearly states that America is trying to stop immigrants from coming into America by building the Great Wall. He mentions, “America is raising a wall in the desert to separate Latin American peasants who will work for low wages from the Americans who would hire them.” We have people who want to come to America because they want the freedom in which they think America has, but American citizens are excluding them. The wall that was built clearly shows the separation it creates between immigrants and citizens and a sense of not belonging because they are not American citizens. A melting pot is having different ethnicities together in one nation in which America has failed to have.

Also, immigrants who are able to come to America feel unwelcomed due to the treatment of American citizens. Immigrants feel that they are unwelcomed because they are excluded from participating in American traditions. For example, in the video analysis: American voices, there was a young women who wished she was an American citizen so that she could participate in the dances they would do when they have parades and different other activities. Due to her not being an American citizen. She could not participate in the dance activity. She was excluded because she was an immigrant. Then, there was a young man who faced brutality because he was not an American citizen. An American citizen hit the immigrant with a rock hitting his forehead. Although we have people coming into America, it does not show that America is a melting pot. America is not a melting pot once again immigrants are being discriminated against due to them not being a citizen. The exclusion and brutality leads to separation within the different ethnicities and different groups people create on their own.

In conclusion, America is a melting pot, but as Joyce Millet points out, it is more like a salad. The comparison between the two is that in a salad, you can see everything, the lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers, and in America you can see the different ethnicities that create separation. The salad is a symbol of explicit, seeing the diversity within the different ethnicities and one that creates unity. There is no unity due to the animosity and hatred Americans tend to show the immigrants within their actions. Therefore, it is not a melting pot.

No matter what country you are in being an immigrant isn’t an easy thing. Especially now in the United States where immigration is seen as a problem with our new president. A melting pot, a metaphor for a mix of multi-ethnical and/or multi-cultural people who come together to make one harmonious society and culture, is a common term to refer to the United States of America. Many people from numerous places all over the world pour into this land. However, the transition from one country and culture to another does not come easily to all. Some struggle to conciliate the new culture into their own, while others assimilate so well into the new environment that they near forget, and sometimes, reject, their roots. Some Americans argue that immigrants refuse to assimilate into U.S. culture, but according to Cole, “our society exerts tremendous pressure to conform, and cultural separatism rarely survives a generation” (559). Little by little, immigrants newly living in the U.S. pick up on our language, behaviors, customs and so on, all through exposure alone. Over time, immigrants adapt to our culture and in return, they also enrich our culture by adding more diversity. It is this diversity that enhances environments within our country such workplaces, neighborhoods, and also schools. After all, being a diverse country shows that we are a country that openly accepts the differences of others and embraces their freedom to be different as well. Pressuring immigrants to completely leave behind their previous culture and conform to “American Culture” is not only seen as controlling and unjust, it also assumes America has one single culture when in fact, American culture is composed from various individual cultures. Although sometimes it can be rather difficult to work with different cultures and some cultures negatively interact with others, that should not be an excuse for anyone to fear immigrants nor immorally prohibit them from making a home where ever they please to do so. America is a melting pot of cultures, which helps portray itself as a beautifully diverse country where anyone is accepted with open arms. Immigrants choose this country for a reason; America is one of the most opportunity-filled countries that is rich in culture and diversity. Not only does immigration enrich our culture, but it also enriches the lives of…

For years, America has been known as The Great Melting Pot. This is due to the mass amounts of immigrants that have congregated in the country since the 18th century. Immigration is what has defined America since its beginning: America began growing from the Quakers and Protestants that fled England from the religious oppression that they faced there. It continued to grow with the Irish that were looking for work and a better opportunity for their children. And it continues to grow with people from all over the world who seek refuge from political, religious, and economical oppression, just like those first immigrants. However, if America’s borders are closed, millions would be left in the dark to fend for themselves. Not only that, immigration has it’s pros that actually help America, including helping the economy, improving its…

There are papers written about how these people don’t have the right to be an American citizen. On a political cartoon there is a wall that is blocking the Asians from being able to get to America. It is seen how the Americans felt. There is also a ladder falling with a man attempting to get over the wall. It symbolizes the want for the immigrants who wanted to be in America so badly. The Americans are also looking down on the Asians showing a feeling of dominance (Source J). In one document there is a explanation on why the immigrants didn’t need to be in America. The writer says that “They have none of the inherited instincts and tendencies which made it comparatively easy to deal with the immigration of the olden days” meaning that the immigrants did not have the same culture as the Americans did and it angered them (Walker). It can be seen that immigration also changed over time. In a pie chart there is a visual sign of the change in who was coming over to America. It went from 93% of Northern and western Europeans to only 61%. The Asian population dropped from 1% to .5%. All of these numbers showed a dominance in people who looked more like Americans than the others (Source H). One person, Mary Antin, attempted to stick up for those people says that it was unconstitutional and incorrect. Even with these statements being as true as can…
