The Great Migration, Alienation, and Reincarnation in Baldwin & Ellison: An Atypical Comparison The great migration of roughly 1.6 million blacks to the Northern U.S (Historical Census), and most notably New York City in the early nineteen-hundreds eventually culminated in the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement which brought forth an enormous influx of artistic accomplishments generated by a new generation of African American musicians, artists, writers, poets and playwrights (Huggins). This exciting and new movement was unique in that it longed for the development of a new identity of what it is to be “black” in America, while still holding high hopes for future generations of African Americans. However, while this movement was certainly among the most socially progressive and significant moments and African American history, it still recognized a rich historical identity and seldom failed to emphasize its roots in the South. Literature generated during this time period especially perpetuated and embraced the importance of recognizing the deep seeded history of black Americans and often emphasized the fact that any attempt to divorce or ignore this rich past is inherently an exercise in futility and would ultimately lead to the failure of developing a true sense of self for African Americans within the new social constructs of the twentieth century (Macey). Novels such as Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man and Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwin both feature characters who are internally struggling to identify themselves within these newly developed social constructs, however find it impossible to do so without supplementing this self-exploration with a strong understanding of the implications of their cultural history and how it effects the decisions they make in the present. Moreover, this understanding allows the characters to enhance their own ability to better recognize African

    As a man of faith, James Baldwin led a life different from his beliefs. An openly gay black man, he became a spokesmen condemning discrimination of gays and the Civil Rights of blacks. Nevertheless, Baldwin 's attributes as a writer are undeniable. Even the confused of souls serve the purpose of design; spiritually speaking. Oddly enough Jimmy was the epitome, or at least a constant advocate, of universal love and brotherhood. Baldwin, in his lifetime, was able to effect a large population through his works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and plays. Whether in terms homophobic or racist, or anti-homophobic or anti-racist (rarely, though more often with the former than with the latter, do the poles of either of these oppositions come together), critics have dwelt on a transcendence defined as a coming to terms with one 's identity. This transcendence relies on the transparency of revelation in the text and the assertion of this transparency 's liberatory potential, regardless of whether or not such liberation is a term of approbation. Such a reading allows "race" and sexuality to disappear from critical view; more precisely, it allows critics to cast them as mere obstructions littering the path of a surpassing transcendence, usually cast in terms of art.…

In our generation now, there aren’t many kids who see art as poetry or music, but as a piece of painting that we can make using pencils, paint, and markers. Out of those few kids, there are a great number of them who see art in poetry more than a composition framed in a museum. Now out of those few, there would be a wide range of African American artist to become big-time artist. Who would have given us an opening to get such a great opportunity to become known in the world that use to be segregated years ago? In the 1920’s, many talented African Americans came to New York City and began showing their talents. Out of all of those talents, a few was selected. One of those talents were poetry. Artist like Langston Hughes and Zora Neal Hurston became big-time artist. They were liked by all races which made them a great African American poets.
