Conflicts somehow also started through greed , that are often seen in states with negative economic growth and/or systemic poverty, as this implies limited state capacity to provide opposition groups with economic concessions as well as the likelihood of the absence of an effective military or police apparatus to contend with those seeking power or resources. The phrase "greed versus grievance" or "greed and grievance" refer to the two baseline arguments put forward by scholars of armed conflict on the causes of civil war.…

As the case study covered in this study demonstrates, “peacemaking and post-conflict reconstruction are best achieved by addressing structural injustices. Peacemaking has everything to do with the ongoing management of social and political conflicts through good governance. It encompasses the entrenching of respect for human rights and political pluralism, and the elimination of economic injustice” (Cheru 2002, 196).…
In the article, "Capitalism and Greed"(1982) by James L. Doti the author states, “In his path breaking work, The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith described an economic system based on self-interest"(1). This economic system based on self-interest is the foundation for capitalism and pertains to the 21st century where America still uses capitalism as its economic model. In the article, "America's Disease is Greed"(2004) by Andrew Greeley, he discusses and makes many points how greed comes with capitalism. First glance at a capitalist economy the morals of the self-interest theory might get questioned, but a more in depth look at the capitalist society it shows that it is the best way to gain economic performance.…
Between the years 1991 and 2002, tens of thousands died and more than two million people were displaced in the Republic of Sierra Leone (BBC News). This paper will be evaluating the conflict of Sierra Leone in the context of general theories of civil conflict. It will define and discuss the actors involved, time span, deaths, causes, and other concepts regarding civil war. This paper will discuss how these major concepts relate to the Sierra Leone conflict and how typical or atypical these theories are.…
This is the case for both conflicts, having very few aspects related to greed and the majority related to grievance. The greed that can be seen through the Rwandan Civil War is related to the countries vast supply of minerals. Huge amounts of gold, diamonds, and copper are found in this region, which can be sold for a fortune. This causes greed both in an individual scale and on a government scale. On the individual scale, everyone wants to be a part of the wealth that can come from these minerals.…
The origins of the conflict that has captured the headlines (see pages) are not, primarily, either regional or global but local. Since time immemorial, lawlessness and violence have had a toehold in and around the vast Sahara desert and the terrain that stretches eastward across to Somalia in the Horn of Africa. But in the past few years the anarchy has…
Chris has been forced to live under his dad’s rule for his entire life. This caused Chris to resent any authority, which includes government laws. Undesired authority can spark the idea of being a rebel or cause someone to become disobedient. In America, you are allowed to express opinions and complaints. It is in America’s foundation to be allowed to challenge some aspects of life. However, in some people’s cases, including Chris’, they take it a step further and challenge ALL aspects of life. People who rebel have deemed it that certain rules are unnecessary to follow. These people take the right to be an American for granted. Other countries have little rights for people, where their citizens would love the right to religion, speech, etc. Also in extreme cases, rebels could have a warped sense of right and wrong. Rebels who denounce rules they deem worthless are not displaying how to be a true American. While as an American, each citizen is given the right to question things and speak up, outright not following is unacceptable. Within this…
Within this essay, the Theory of Justice will be broke down. It will lay out some personal information on John Rawls. It will give the principles of the theory and explain what they mean. It will also explain how the principles of these theories differ from traditional utilitarianism. Lastly it will show how justice is defined by modern criminal justice agencies and other entities involved in the criminal justice system and how it differs from security.…
As a famous representative of realism theory, Waltz asked himself the question why do wars occur? “Waltz’s question is as old as war itself, possibly because “to explain how peace can be more readily achieved requires an understanding of the causes of war” (Waltz, 1959: 2). By the time Waltz posed this question, many answers to it already existed. These answers fell into three categories (or as IR theorists came to define them, were found at the three “levels of analysis” or in the “three images”). These three categories/levels/images are: the individual, the state, and the state system” (C. Weber, 2009, p. 17). These main causes of conflict will be represented in detail in the main body of the paper by the example of Berlin Crisis.…
Nearly 36% of Americans were considered clinically obese in September of 2016. Three out of every four American men are diagnosed as overweight. Americans spend the most per student's education compared to any other country, and a majority of those find themselves unemployed. As decades flash by noticeable changes have evolved; leaving Americans to be lazy and rely on technology, controlled by their status of wealth and oblivious to real world problems.…
Great post. The conflict theory clearly explains human greed and selfishness of our societies. Everyone is seeking their own interest and nobody is there brother or sister’s keeper. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer leading to class struggle. The ruling power created laws that oppress the lower class while profiting out of those rules by creating crimes. The lower class is barely surviving and crime has become a way of life. The lower class sees crime as a way survival because of the way society operates. It is saddened how little criminals know how the criminal justice system work. If only people know that committing a crime is actually putting money in others’ pockets, maybe, just maybe, people would think twice…
consensus that we live in the greatest nation in the world is not so much a feeling of nationalism as it is a forgone conclusion in the minds of millions of Americans. What a great many of these millions do not realize is that they are the victims of a government set up by our founding fathers to uphold a class system based on a very unproportional distribution of wealth. As the old saying goes, you need money to make money, and this is never more true than it is in the United States, the land where the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor. Howard Zinn asks, "What is economic justice?" There is no clear answer, except to say economic justice simply does not exist.…
Throughout the world the blame of the detrimental outcomes of various communities all fall on greed. The blood diamond industry in Africa is a great illustration of how greed can really damage a community because many African rebel groups have put children in risk to obtain unnecessary wealth. Clearly seen by America, greed can numb the sense of humanity and cause carelessness about the suffering around us. Greed can cause people to be materialistic and not notice the things that they really need so they can get through daily life. In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the selfish ambition of getting more wealth within the village completely degraded the morality of the community, that even murder was an acceptable option. Many communities have fallen into the hands of corruption by reason of their greedy desires.…
