Before I begin my exposition, I want to take a moment to quote the wise King Solomon’s book of Ecclesiastes, whereupon he has written, “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Indeed, everything that man sought throughout history has been but one vain attempt after another to satisfy our lust, our wish to conquer and own everything. This fool’s wish hath bent man into a crooked being, to the point of forcefully enlisting the aid of unwilling others to achieve this impossible goal. One of those among the unwilling was in life my grandfather.…

Through the malicious and extravagant battles exhibited in The Iliad, the idea that vengeance is sought once an individual's pride has been harmed and can only be resolved by combat, is developed.…

As social activist Eartha Kitt once said, “Greed is so destructive. It destroys everything.” In Beowulf, by an anonymous writer and The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, greed plays an omnipresent role, as it manifests itself into the societies of the texts, resulting in acts of war. This notion proves to have a good, yet adverse effect on the characters, as it shows strength and ambition…
