Character analysis (John Coffey)
"I tried to take it back, but it was to late." Pg 315. John Coffey is a big man with an even bigger heart. He is an orphan with a gift from God, the ability to give and take sickness and a few other things. That is why the quote above is important. With a big heart he tries to help all he can. He took away Paul Edgecombs urinary infection, brought Delcroix's mouse, Mr. Jingles, back to live after he was crushed and killed, and he healed Warden Hal Moores wife of a brain tumor. He tried to take back what Wharton had done to those two girls but it was too late and they couldn't be saved. He has been wondering alone for a long time saving all he could and he finds this power a blessing and a curse.
Scene Analysis
John Coffey is ready to go.
In this scene John Coffey sits in his cell with Paul and tells him he is ready to go. He says that he is okay with going to old sparky, the electric chair. On page 491, in the last paragraph, he says to Paul that he is tired of the pain he sees and hears, being lonely, and being in the dark. He is tired of people being ugly to each other because it feels like glass in his head. As he says this with Paul's hands in his, Paul begins to receive John's feeling and emotions and says in his writing that he can see the darkness and pain in John. After this wave of emotion John tells Paul that when he touched Wharton in an earlier incident he remembered seeing him with the girls and that he remembered what had happened, that Wharton used them against each other. This scene is important because it explains what John feels and gives more detail into his power from God. He is unable to die because of his gift to give and take away sickness as well as many other things, but he is ready to go and does not want the prison guards to feel bad when he does.

That poor little French man was scared I think. Maybe if I wasn’t born like this I woulda been to. everyone looked at me like I us a mad man. Only boss Paul looked alright after watchin the death leave me. I guess it's something that takes time getting use to.

Seeing and hearin all the pain is more than I can handle. Theys said before they felt bad for killing a man of God. I think they was better after I told them I was ready. After all if I could have done this myself I would have ages ago...
News Article (Delacroix's death)
Delacroix Fried In Execution!
Edward Delacroix, a prisoner at Cold Mountain Penitentiary, died of a horrible execution last night. As he was waiting to be tied down for good a prison guard named Percy Wetmore forgot to wet the sponge. Wetmore says "It was an accident, must have been the heat of the moment and I forgot." Delacroix's face was said to have burnt onto the mask along with other gruesome details that will not be disclosed at this time. Prison guard, Paul Edgecomb, says that "It was his first time on the from and I believed he could do it." After the incident Wetmore has asked for a transfer to a new building out of this area. Whether or not he has done it for the mistake he made or for other reasons has not been said.
Literary Letter
Dear Chelsea Students,
I'm glad to hear you are reading my book, "The Green Mile".
I hope you are intrigued by my work and enjoy the book. My name is Stephen Edwin King. After I graduated from the University of Maine I became a teacher. While I was a teacher I began to find myself as a writer. I at one point used the pseudonym Richard Bachman. I moved around a lot for my job and due to my mother's health. In the fall of 1974 I moved to Boulder, Colorado. Here I got the idea for my book "The Shining" which was set in Colorado, as well as my book "The Stand". As I have said before in a panel discussion, writing has always been it for me. I use to write every day except for Christmas, the 4th of July, and my own birthday. Most of my books, If not all, revolve around genres like horror and fantasy fictions. Although my books are a long read, they are great works of art. I believe that using big and small, old and young is fun for my characters. I like to relate them with each other in times of fear which you will find in many of my books. I hope you enjoy reading my work as much as I enjoyed writing
them.
Sincerely,
Stephen King.
