The Gunfighter By Nick Offerman Analysis

My primary source is a segment of the sketch The Gunfighter by Nick Offerman. The story took place in a pub, where the gunfighter found that a strange voice saying out every character’s mental activity in front of all the others in that pub. After the voice exposed several character’s secrets, which were mostly immoral, the atmosphere had been driven to the boiling point. At that time, the gunfighter made a speech to evoke others to revolt the voice’s control. His words worked for a second, then the voice started to expose the gunfighter’s crime of killing one of the drinker’s son. That caused contradiction immediately, started by the gunfighter, people began to shoot others, and they all died in that pub.
The sketch used different approaches
By exposing humanity cruelly in the sketch, audiences would rethink the similar phenomena in their life, and introspect their hypercritical behaviours. Those help them to relate the plots to their daily lives, and to understand the preposterous of how themselves self-deceived and mask in front of others. The relate part made the sketch meaningful, and more than a comedy. Back to the part of dramatic irony, the distinguish of the dramatic irony could be easily made as an outsider just like that audiences did when watching the sketch, that links audiences to the sketch and gives them spaces to judge what the situations that they had unaware of might be in other’s perspectives. For the speech part, the contradiction of imagination and the fact deepen audience’s impression. The sense of humour is being reflected by the irony and made people to consider the tendency of deceive in human nature.
