The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to kill King James I. the plot was to blow up the house of the lords during the State Opening of England's Parliament. The plan also included the king’s 9 year old daughter whom was supposed to be awarded as the Catholic head of state. This may have occurred after the hopes of greater religious tolerance was defeated, which left many English Catholics disappointed. They had few but strong plotters. One in particular, Guy Fawkes had 10 years of military experience fighting in the Spanish Netherlands. He was in charge of the explosives. Anyways this is how the plot became known. The plot got in the hands of the authorities in an anonymous letter sent to William Parker, the 4th Baron Monteagle. During a search of the House of Lords, someone discovered guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder. 36 barrels of gunpowder is enough to destroy the house of the lords completely. When people found out about their plot many of the fled away, some either tried to get enlisted to support and help out during this time, even though they were still leaving. Many people stood up for the sheriff of Worcester and his men. In the battle Catesby was one of those shot and killed. 8 of the survivors, including Fawkes, were sentenced to be hanged and killed. The Gunpowder Plot was acknowledged for many years afterwards by special sermons and other public events. The ringing of church bells was one way they acknowledged it, which eventually turned into the Bonfire Night of today.
