Haitian Revolution
DBQ
From the 17th century to the 19th century the Haitian revolution consisted of African slaves, French authorities, and the people of Haiti. In addition it’s inspired through the Enlightenment thinking which derived from Europe and it affects other places around the world. Not only does Haiti’s revolution have an effect on themselves but onto other regions around the world as well. Haitian revolution is international through its ideas from starting the revolution, the people from regions around the world whom where involved, and it’s inspiration toward other regions around the world.
The Haitian Revolution was a global event because it demonstrated that Haitian revolutionaries were influence and inspired by enlightenment ideas from France and other European nations as shown in documents 1, 2 and 6. In the declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, Enlightenment thought was show to be an influence in codes for France (Doc 2). These rights that are applied toward the French are not applied toward Haiti. Haiti is strictly controlled by the French through series of laws as shown in the French Code Noir (Doc 1). Their lack of natural rights inspired them to step forward and gain independence so that they can receive natural rights. They were inspired to build their own nation based upon Enlightenment thinking of “liberty” and “peace” that was inspired by Enlightenment (Doc 6). Jean Jacques Dessalines was speaking to the Haitians right after Haiti gained independence. With the revolution still fresh in their mind, their opposition against France should still linger, which is why Dessalines’s words against France was had hatred toward them. An additional document, to further my understanding of how Enlightenment affected Haiti is if I have a document pertaining the citizens of Haiti reacting to the letter Dessalines sent to the them through written documents or diaries.
