Healthcare database systems are critical in health care. Databases are used frequently in healthcare. There are different types of databases. This paper will define health care database systems and describe how databases are used across the health care industry. It will also explain the different database architectures including the relational architecture and describe the needs of database users across the health care continuum. A database is any collection of data organized for storage, accessibility, and retrieval. A healthcare database serves to replace the paper documents, file folders, and filing cabinets of old. This makes data more convenient and immediate.

This data is normally retrieved through the activities of patient care and is very useful. Documentation that is within health care databases is frequently used for improving quality, patient security and safety, better decision making, and putting a stop to redundancy. Healthcare databases made it easy for the organization by facilitating, organizing, storing, and processing large amounts of data. Databases across the health care industry are used in several ways. Databases are used to reimbursement purposes for payment. They have become popular with payments from Medicare and Medicaid. There are databases that are used for specific diseases that are widespread in health care. When an outbreak occurs and incidents of diseases in specific areas, health care databases are used to find the geographic locations. Databases are also used in clinical practices. They are made useful for billing, keeping patient records, and automating sensitive …show more content…

The differences in the architectures are based on how the tables and records are related. Relational architecture is a very popular database. It is also the most mature and widely used database system in production. Relational databases can be used to track patient care in the form of treatments, outcomes of those treatments, and critical indicators of a patient 's current state such as blood pressure, heart rate, and blood glucose levels. They can also be used to interconnect with multiple informational systems throughout a healthcare facility. Relational databases have the potential to eliminate paper storage and transfer of information and to answer important questions about healthcare efficacy. Relational systems serve as the repositories of record behind nearly all online transactions and most online content management systems including social networks. This database also serves as a well-understood point of reference for new extensions and revolutions in database systems that may arise in the future. Another type of database architecture is the Object-oriented model. This model is powerful and quite complex. With the relatively new object-relational database model is the wide spread and simple relational database model extended by some basic object-oriented concepts. These allow them to work with the relational database model but also have some advantages of the

I think that the benefits of having medical information electronically stored in an internet database can be many things. One of the major benefits would be if something happened to you or a loved one and the ambulance needs to pick them up, they can have access to your information. This can in turn help save your life. The information is already in the database in the event that you do not remember or cannot speak at the moment. In the event that you go to a hospital where your regular doctors are not around, they can access your information. This helps so you do not receive the wrong medication which can lead to serious injuries or even death. Having…

The effectiveness of databases is based on the fact that from one single, inclusive database much information regarding a range of organizational principles can be obtained. In the health care industry database systems allows information to be shared and available to different users; it can provide an accurate, consistent, and up-to-date information about a patient’s condition and treatment, as well as provide a security measure so that the information is only viewable to those who should see it.…

There are several advantages in having a standardized medical database. The most important advantage is a standardized medical database will offer medical facilities access to the patient records more easily. If a patient decides to change health care providers or if an emergency situation arose the patient would be able to receive service immediately. The database will contain patient’s medical information, so that if a patient were to encounter a medical emergency their medical files would be easy to obtain in order to treat the patient for the particular injury or illness. For example, if I were taken to the emergency room, the doctor would able to see that I am allergic to the…

In the healthcare arena, information is everywhere and it is accessed and utilized by everyone. Information is the lifeblood of any organization and no organization would exist without it (Phillips, 2005). Regardless if the information is in paper form or accessed through a computer, there is a process needed to locate, retrieve, and evaluate the information. Since the onset of former President George W. Bush's steps to transform the health care delivery system through the adoption of interoperable electronic health records (EHR), the nation has shifted toward the use of EHR (Dunlop, 2007). The very basics consist of data which is an uninterrupted element. A collection of data is processed and then displayed as information. When data and information are brought together, knowledge results and decisions can be made.…

During unexpected event, data software and hardware systems are usually destroyed. A data base back-up is a secondary copy of a data base that are stored in a place designated by the facility so the data can be recovered in case of uneventful disaster. According to Kibbe (2005), “ The HIPAA regulation explicitly states that any healthcare facility that electronically maintains or transmits health information for individuals must establish procedures for back-up and recovery.” ( pp. 43). Healthcare Cost. It is currently believed that electronic medical record system will improve health, decrease medical errors and have large savings on healthcare. There will be less waste of paper because paper charting will be a thing of the past. According to President Obama, computer management systems help decrease repeating expensive tests and reduce medical errors. (Haig, 2009) It will cost millions of dollars to install a computerized system in a facility but with the reduction of medical errors, reduction of repeated expensive test, and accurate data collection of patient’s information which will monitor a patient’s health and eventually prevent any diseases from getting worst thus lesser hospitalization, would reduce the healthcare cost. Benefits. With the new computerized system, patients will be glad that healthcare providers are now placing more importance on patient’s time, have immediate access to their information, thus cutting the waiting time. As nurses, the use of the new system increases the time spent with the patient at bedside because patient’s information is readily obtained. The nurses can give more attention to the patient’s health problems and be able to help them with their concerns safely. With the use of a computerized system, nurses will be able to organize their day faster…

Modern health information systems are very complex; several models address the architecture of modern health information exchanges. The centralized model and the decentralized model are just two of the several models of modern health information systems. The centralized modern health information exchange model stores patient information in one centralized location. The centralized model allows single database inquiries into the system. A centralized health information exchange model is very quick in information delivery. Information changes require multiple transactions and do not occur in a time fashion. Decentralized or Federal model of health information exchange system is a different information exchange model. The federal or decentralized…
