According to the oxford dictionary online moral dilemma is "a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two course of action, either of which entails transgressing a moral principle," (Oxford Dictionaries, n.d.) These moral dilemmas often occur in our daily lives and we are inflicted with making the right choice. Unfortunately, this is not an essay task, more often than not ever choice that is made will have consequence to their actions and one must decide if they can handle those consequences which may follow. Take for instance the Heinz Dilemma it is essential about a husband Mr. Heinz, who is faced with whether or not to steal the only known drug that would save his wife's live who is suffering from …show more content…
a deadly cancer. The difficulty is the producer of the medication will not allow the husband to make a deal with him in order to obtain the medication at a price that he can afford.
The ethical issue presented to Mr.
Heinz is to find a way to get ahold of this medication to save his wife. Logical thinking provides us with being able to make critical and rational decisions in moral decision making. However, when you throw emotional state into the process it is extremely difficult to know the "right" from the "wrong". They can be so soul wrenching that people tend to do unspeakable acts wherein they are not been accustomed to doing before or even in their character. The agony Mr. Heinz must have been under and all the thoughts running around in his brain to make the "right" choices. But for who truly is the right choice? This is the dilemma he faces. Many scenarios come in to play with this particular issue, for his wife to live he knows he has to uncover some way or another to attain that she gets this medication. He seeks out the drug maker after the doctor explained to him about a particular drug that could potential help his wife. The druggist however was not interested in making an agreement, subsequently he took matters into his own hands and stole the potential lifesaving …show more content…
medication.
"No, I discovered the drug and I'm going to make money from it," (Kohlberg, n.d).
This being the quote from the druggist shows where he stands completely on wanting to help out a dying women. Ethically speaking there really is not any, he is a business man and like all businesses need to make a profit off their products. The events such as these are the exact reason he invented the drug to being with. He has produced a product worth of the money he is changing to people for a cure. What he has elected is completely legal, though some may say it is unethical to not help a person who I dying if you have the means, and maybe morally it isn't, but it is not the wrong choice, it is his choice. If the druggist took this dilemma and used it for an opportunistic nature for getting the drug out in the public eye he would still be unethical for he is exploiting the gravely ill, as you can see there is not a morally correct
answer.
Personally, I can see the decisions of both the husband and the druggist behave. If it was my significant other just as with most anybody we would do whatever it takes if there is an opportunity to save the one we love life. Although, I see the husbands perspective I would not be able to break in and steal from any one for any reason. People work hard for what they have, make, or even their intellectual knowledge. To just take that from someone is wrong in more ways than one. It is not in my nature, moral guidelines would stand in my way. It would do no good to get the treatment this way and not have the likelihood of being around to live life happy with my spouse. Granted they would be alive, but in life we live and we die it is all part of the circle.
As for if I was the druggist he in my opinion did the right thing for him. It is his property alone until he chooses it to be shared. He worked extremely hard and should have no remorse for asking above the amount of money it took to produce the product in the first place. He deserve for this ground breaking drug, the amount of time, level of knowledge, and labor he invested in the making of such a drug is worth any amount he wishes to charge for it. Imagine medication that has the potential to be the only one to save people's lives who suffer from the same cancer as the wife did.
We do not live in a word where you get something for nothing, nobody can survive that way. In the perfect world it is always clear what is right and wrong. In the real world it is not very often that things are flawless. Sometimes decisions need to be made that are extremely difficult and it is not always clear cut right or wrong. An option may not be beneficial for you just because it is for another. Our hearts tell us one thing and our heads till us another when we are faced with a decision where we think with our hearts it is not always the best, we need to be rational and in a good sound mind in order to make a moral and ethical decision.
