The Heroin Epidemic
English 151-15
29 September 2013
Heroin Rising If one traveled through the small quiet community of Monroe, MI you would probably never think that this town has a drug problem. From the outside it seems like a nice middle class suburb that might be ideal to raise a family. For those that reside here however, they know that there is a growing problem. There aren’t many families that haven’t been affected by heroin addiction in this small town. The drug has literally swept through this county like an angry mob of rioters bringing crime, death, and destruction with it, leaving many people in the community asking, “Why?”
An article posted in the Monroe Evening News on July 2, 2013 stated:
There were 40 drug overdose deaths in Monroe Co. in the year 2012, and at least 15 of them were directly related to heroin according to the health department figures. Monroe County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Carl J. Schmidt said that is a high number for this size of an area. ”I was alarmed,” he said. “It was a lot.” Dr. Schmidt said 15 cases directly involved heroin but there most likely were others. In many instances, a person died of an overdose and several substances were present in his or her system. Dr. Schmidt explained that when there are more than three drugs detected in a deceased person’s system, then the official cause of death is due to multiple intoxication and they are not specified. But Dr. Schmidt said heroin most likely is included in some of those multiple cases. “I am certain there are more than 15 deaths that involved heroin,” he said. With these statistic’s it’s very clear how out of control the drug problem has become in Monroe. Heroin is derived from morphine which is a natural substance found in the seedpod of the Asian opium poppy plant. With long term use the user not only gets mentally addicted to the drug, their body’s also become physically dependent on it. According to the website drugfreeworld.org, “New painkillers came on the market

I do believe that Vermont is facing a severe epidemic when it comes to opiate addiction. According to Governor Peter Shumlin, “We 're spending roughly $134 million of taxpayer dollars a year to incarcerate drug- and alcohol-addicted people.” The amount of money spent on addicted people is astonishing. This dollar amount could be greatly reduced if proper treatment programs we put into place. Opiates can alter the way the brain functions. Once such drug, hydrocodone, has become popular because it is easy to get a prescription for.…

Heroin is named after the German word for hero, heroisch. Heroin is an illegal, highly addictive drug. It is both the most abused and the most rapidly acting of the opiates. Heroin is processed from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of certain varieties of poppy plants. It is typically sold as a white or brownish powder or as the black sticky substance known on the streets as black tar heroin. Although purer heroin is becoming more common, most street heroin is cut with other drugs or with substances such as sugar, starch, powdered milk, or quinine. Street heroin can also be cut with strychnine or other poisons. Because heroin abusers do not know the actual strength of the drug or its true contents, they are at risk of overdose or death. Heroin also poses special problems because of the transmission of HIV and other diseases that can occur from sharing needles or other injection equipment.…

Over many years the abuse of Heroin has been known, but now the epidemic is out of control and many are dying daily. Heroin is a substance that is synthesized from morphine, and extracted from the poppy seed plant. The opium poppy has been refined for more than five thousand years for a variety of medicinal uses. When heroin was first created it was used as a cough syrup and pain killer. At first people believe it would help with morphine and opium addiction but then doctors realized people were becoming addicted to heroin. Heroin was first synthesized in 1874, and then marketed by the Beyer Company in Germany in 1898 until 1910. Beyer exported Heroin to more that 23 countries in 1899. In 1914 the Harrison Act was passed, and it was the aggressively enforced that all Physicians, who were prescribing drugs to addicts would be punished. Between 1915 and 1938 over five thousand physicians were found guilt for violating the Harrison Act. The modern drug war started in the 1960s and continues today with no success in combating the epidemic on drugs.…

All across the nation, there has and will always be a problem with drug abuse. Drug abuse is a very serious and ongoing difficulty that society is faced with daily. However, since drug abuse across the nation is such a broad subject with all the different drugs available, I would like to narrow it down to a more personal topic. In my home state of Montana, methamphetamines is constantly being distributed and abused. My stance is that we must work harder to put an end to this abuse in order to save Montana families and our businesses. Just last week, on one day alone, the Billings Gazette newspaper reported in three articles on women getting penalized for dealing meth. Statistics show that the numbers of crime rates going up are because…

Opiates are a group of narcotics that contain opium or natural synthetic opium (Shoenfeld, 2012). Some of the commonly abused opiates include: Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Heroin, Codeine, Morphine, and Methadone as well as many other pain medications. They can be crushed and snorted, taken orally, and even injected. The most restrictive legally available drugs are the opiates Methadone and Morphine (Shoenfeld, 2012). They are prescribed for severe pain. Individuals can be prescribed methadone as an option for treatment but in reality is highly addictive and commonly abused.…

Opioid are derived from opium or synthetic drugs that have similar properties. These drugs possess the ability to reduce pain. Using opioids for extended periods of time causes the body to become adapted to them. As a result, the body becomes physically dependent on the drug (Paulozzi, 287). According to the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Americans consume 80% of the world’s opioid supply (“More White, Middle-aged Women Overdose on Opioids, Study Says.”). This number is should be shocking and should signal a red flag. Having such easy access to opioids in the United States explains why drug overdoses have increased so drastically. Opioids are not the only drugs that have caused an increase in drug overdose rates. Heroin overdose rates have almost…

The assessment of the neighborhood was completed individually on separate occasions and as a group on our way to a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting. As a group our windshield survey was captured while driving from Northeastern Hospital, west on Allegheny Avenue, and south on Kensington Avenue. The time of the window survey was approximately 5:45 on a warm Tuesday evening. We decided to drive along the smaller side streets after the meeting, in order to get a different view of the community. It was a busy time of the day, many people walking, while others rode bikes to their destinations. The streets were lined with scattered trash, many building stood no longer occupied. Everywhere you looked people were gathered on the sidewalk or sitting on the steps of boarded up storefronts. Some were quenching their thirst from a brown bagged covered bottle. As we pulled up to NA meeting, we sat in the car a few minutes to observe the interaction of the crowd gathered outside of THE LAST STOP which is also a recovery house.…

here has been an ever present threat within the United States that continues to grow at an alarming rate by the day; that threat is substance addiction. Nearly 38,000 deaths were linked to overdoses in 2009; that exceeds the total number of traffic violations for that year (“U.S Heroin Crisis”). Citizens and politicians continue to name it the number one “growing public health crisis” (“U.S Heroin Crisis”), but how do these users get addicted and what is the U.S doing to stop this so called “growing threat”? The U.S has recently deployed the overdose antidote Naloxone into the U.S, which has been a large area of debate between users and nonusers. This drug is a good way to get addicts on the road to recovery and a great way to train the average…
