The Acres Home community in north Houston has a rich history and culture. The community began has a rural community and has maintained many aspects of its rural roots as the Houston Metropolitan area has expanded around it. However, there are several problems facing the current population of Acres Home. At the end of my fifth grade year, I unexpectedly got accepted to Risley Early College Academy, a program designed to prepare middle and high school students for college. Risley was originally an ordinary high school, which has been standing for years, but someone decided to turn the school into a college program for young students. Throughout my years at Risley, the school was ranked as number one in testing, which proved that the program was a success. Even though the program was doing so well and had so many achievements academically, the school closed down due to budget cuts. I have had the opportunity to go to two middle schools due to moving locations. This paper is going to be based on my experiences at Hermosa Middle School in Farmington, New Mexico. Since, this where I started caring more about my education and I can relate more to this placement. To begin with, Hermosa Middle School serves grade from 6th-8th. The public schooling is often regarded as “the great equalizer” in the American society. For many years, American students supposedly have had an equal opportunity to master the three Rs: reading, writing, and arithmetic. This problem can be seen in the students that live in the Rio Grande Valley, also known as “The Valley”. “[The Valley] is a low-income, majority-Latina/o, border, rural community” with significantly lower high-school graduation rates and college attendance rates than the rest of the state (Cabrera, López, and Sáenz 233). The lower percentages of students from this area can be attributed to barriers such as “financial difficulties, teachers limited in their abilities to teach college knowledge, and the inaccessibility of counselors” (Cabrera, López, and Sáenz 239). The reason why many students face financial difficulties when they are trying to go to college is that many of these are from low-income families. The limited ability of teachers in The Valley to teach college knowledge can be attributed to the fact that schools in the area emphasize standardized testing, as “high school courses were heavily focused on preparing students for the [TAKS] exams,” leaving teachers with little time to teach about knowledge and skills necessary for college (Cabrera, López, and Sáenz 240). As a result, students are not often equipped with skills that will help them in college. Educators can take steps to meet the needs of homeless children, so they can receive a proper education. One effective strategy is to help homeless children remain enrolled in their current school. Local educational agencies should ensure that school faculty are aware of the legal rights of homeless children, and actively collaborate with local shelters to provide continuity in the child’s attendance. Secondly, educators could help the homeless children minimize enrollment delays. Many schools implement policies that minimize enrollment delays, particularly those related to residency, guardianship, and immunization requirements. With the transfer of school records it could take a student weeks to be able to attend their new school. Educators should expedite the process both for students who are transferring into their schools and for those who are leaving. Thirdly, schools should ensure that homeless children are placed in appropriate classroom settings and that they receive the services they are entitled to. If a child needs special educational services, schools should not postpone referrals or testing because of uncertainty about how long the child will be enrolled.
