The History of Artificial Intelligence
History of Artificial Intelligence
The history of artificial intelligence (AI) began in antiquity, with myths, stories and rumors of artificial beings endowed with intelligence or consciousness by master craftsmen; as Pamela McCorduck writes, AI began with "an ancient wish to forge the gods."
The seeds of modern AI were planted by classical philosophers who attempted to describe the process of human thinking as the mechanical manipulation of symbols. This work culminated in the invention of the programmable digital computer in the 1940s, a machine based on the abstract essence of mathematical reasoning. This device and the ideas behind it inspired a handful of scientists to begin seriously discussing the possibility of building an electronic brain.
The field of AI research was founded at a conference on the campus of Dartmouth College in the summer of 1956. Those who attended would become the leaders of AI research for decades. Many of them predicted that a machine as intelligent as a human being would exist in no more than a generation and they were given millions of dollars to make this vision comel true. Eventually it became obvious that they had grossly underestimated the difficulty of the project. In 1973, in response to the criticism of James Lighthill and ongoing pressure from congress, the U.S. and British Governments stopped funding undirected research into artificial intelligence. Seven years later, a visionary initiative by the Japanese Government inspired governments and industry to provide AI with billions of dollars, but by the late 80s the investors became disillusioned and withdrew funding again. This cycle of boom and bust, of "AI winters" and summers, continues to haunt the field. Undaunted, there are those who make extraordinary predictions even now.
Progress in AI has continued, despite the rise and fall of its reputation in the eyes of government bureaucrats and venture capitalists. Problems that had begun to seem impossible in 1970 have

Author for the Washington Post, Joel Achenbach, in his columns, addresses issues from the secret to happiness to Artificial Intelligence. He addresses these issues in a manner of different ways, like expert testimony, analysis, and other rhetorical devices. Achenbach’s purpose as a writer is to inform the audience of the consequences of one’s actions, as mentioned in his article, “Researchers create a Computer Program that learns the way humans do,” when he states, “The breakthrough comes during a period of great excitement in the A.I. community, but also some anxiety about whether there are sufficient safeguards to ensure that machine intelligence doesn't somehow run away from its human creators.” He adopts a consistent tone throughout his columns, one of a casual, yet explanatory voice.…

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer science, which concentrates on the intelligence of machines, and involves applying the principles of reasoning, knowledge planning, learning, communication, perception, and controlling objects to emulate the human brain. The most recognizable AI application is robotics from Hollywood cinema, and includes films such as; I Robot, Transformers, Wall-e, WarGames, A.I., The Terminator, Robocop, Iron Man, and Star Wars to name a few, which is fictional not an actual representation of AI. Robotics applications is only one of three aspects of AI, which also includes Cognitive Science applications, and Natural Interface applications, however, the area businesses are finding the most useful is the Cognitive Science applications (Murugavel, 2014).…

As a novice programmer and a participant in Lego robotics I find the controversy surrounding artificial intelligence very intriguing. Programmers, computer scientists, and researchers alike have debated about the possibility of artificial intelligence becoming more intelligent than humans. Because I do have some knowledge of how computers work I can see why this topic is sparking so much interest. The thought of something that we created having the potential to surpass us is riveting. It’s impossible to fathom the idea that humans may lose their spot as the alphas of the world. In this paper I will break down the arguments surrounding this topic by putting them into simpler terms and prove why one side may be superior to the other.…

When I became interested in computer science, one of the areas that intrigued me the most was that of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI was futuristic back when I first attended college and the ideas that surrounded it seemed unattainable and unrealistic. Today the development of AI has been achieved and continues to grow and expand into new uses.…

All throughout history dating all the way back to the start of the ancient Greek era until today’s era, women were dominated and subjugates to the men of their society. For men have always be seen as the go getters and the provider for their family and it was vital that they were seen as strong, courageous and well respected bringing back only fortune, respect and a good legacy to their family name. This is evident in two famous Greek literatures, a Greek poem called “The Odyssey” by Homer and a Greek play called “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles. The use of technology has always been vital to the life and survival of the human race. Ever since the Neanderthals utilized wooden tools to hunt and cook 500,000 years ago, humans have been fascinated with developing the next cutting edge technology or invention. In 1955, John McCarthy used a term called artificial intelligence, and defined it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines". Over the last 60 years with the inventions of computers, cell phones, and the internet, artificial intelligence has become prominent in the news and in mainstream media. Today, the phrase is a hot topic, not just in tech circles, but around the globe, as many experts believe the ensuing breakthrough will come through A.I.…

Artificial intelligence is a complex subject that requires some background information to fully understand. One of the earliest definitions of "true" artificial intelligence was proposed by Alan Turing with the Turing Test. The idea behind this test was to have a human ask both a computer and a human a series of questions and then see if the tester could tell which was the computer. The AI did not necessarily need to answer all the questions correctly, it just had to give an answer similar to that a human would give. The test would also be done via text so that the computer would not have problems with mimicking human speech. Very few AIs have passed the test with the first occurring in 2012 as it was judged to be human 52 percent of the time. The other major factor in determining a true artificial intelligence was the Chinese Room Experiments by John Searle as an expansion of the Turing Test. In this experiment, Searle wanted to test whether an intelligence was actually interpreting language or just…

Within the realm of Artificial Intelligence there are several secs which are responsible for making up that which is A.I. Normally when an individual thinks of Artificial Intelligence a few things come to mind such as the HAL 9000 system, known as “the inimitable star of the classic Kubrick and Clarke film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’”(Picard 2001), others will think of the movie “Blade Runner”, this film featured an alternate future where a group of individuals were responsible for tracking down cyborg humans known as “Sims” which were so human like they actually were unaware that they weren’t actually humans (Scott, Fancher et al. 2007). These films come to mind because until the late 2000’s this was the closest we ever got to Artificial Intelligence…

As our minds evolve, so does our imagination and the creations we come up with. Artificial intelligence may have been first imagined as an attempt at replicating our own intelligence, but the possibilities of achieving true artificial intelligence is closer than any of us have imagined. Computers, when first invented were fast at computing data, but now they communicate and calculate data much faster than most human beings, but still have difficult fulfilling certain functions such as pattern recognition. Today, research in artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, and many people feel threatened by the possibility of a robot taking over their job, leaving human beings without work.…

These companies are teaching the AI systems to act more and more like a human would. People are starting to wonder where the line will be drawn, and just how far these AI systems will mimic a human (Chandra). Nick Bostrom believes that, "Once there is Super Intelligence, the fate of humanity may depend on what Super Intelligence does. Pound for pound the chimpanzee is stronger than a human, yet its fate relies on what humans do" (TED). If the statement that history tends to repeat itself runs true for AI systems, then the human race has a large problem in the future.…
