Although there are casual players who enjoy a game for a brief period of time, there are also people who are overly obsessed. Obsessed players continuously play with no time limits, while a typical player can control the amount of time they play. This is a video game addiction. Video games create more of an addiction than reading a book as they are difficult to quit playing and people tend to have an urge to pick the controller or keyboard back up and continue to play.…

A video game is an interactive computer that displays a video signal, allowing you to play thousands of games on your television or handheld video game device. (Wikipedia, Video Game) We have came a very long way since the very first type of video game console was invented by Ralph Baer in 1967. From the very first console, the "Brown Box" to the more interactive video game consoles such as the Wii, Playstation, XBOX or the handheld Nintendo DS. Regardless of which video game is being used, it has made a huge impact in life 's of many children, as well as adults today. In the beginning, the games were user friendly and parents did not have much to worry about if they purchased a video game for their child. Take Pac Man for example, a very simple game where the player "Pac Man" eats dots and tries to avoid getting touched by an enemy. Now in 2012, we have games such as Call of Duty which focuses on killing members of the opposite team.…

In 1958, William Higginbotham, a nuclear physicist, created what is now known as the very first video game – ‘Tennis for Two’ (reference). It was a two player tennis game played with two controllers. ‘Tennis for Two’ was meant for a small audience and was never seen as something people could make money from. This particular game was the inspiration to the first successful video game ever created ‘Pong’. ‘Pong’ was an arcade game that released in 1972. Pong’s success made people see gaming as a means of business and thus the gaming industry started. Today we have so many video games releasing every week. There are many different game consoles – ones that can be played at home and ones that are portable. We can also play video games on PC, tablets etcfor example (don’t use “etc” in a paper). Even the mobile phones we use every day can be used to play video games. All these factors have made the gaming industry a multibillion dollar industry. Today the gaming industry is worth more than the music industry and even Hollywood (reference). A new video game that is released today has a good chance to earn as much as a Hollywood movie would. In fact in more than a few cases a successful video game would make more money than most of the…

    The Video Game Narrative

The first argument that arose out of the video game world was the debate of video game violence. Still unresolved, this debate has actually allowed for the video game industry to come fully into the main stream. As the din over violence quieted the fans of the game society began to focus on issues more akin to their own style. So then began the debate of game play vs. the video game narrative. The question arose; can a game also be a story? While the semantics would suggest that, no, a game cannot be a story, we do realize that a game can contain a story. However, considering the amount of games that contain a story we can surmise that this question doesn't further our study, and realizing that the amount of games (mostly of the 1980's) that had no story and only gameplay we can see that the story is not a required facet for a game to be successful.…

Video Game Creating, a technical job that specializes in creating video games, is a career I wish to pursue for animating, illustrating, and gaming. I have wanted to be in this career since I was around 9 or 10 years old. What interested me was when I was used to playing games with a set-map. A set-map is a map where the character can only go two ways, forward or backwards. I played a free-map game, a game where the player chooses the quest and/or path/place they want to go, and I was curious as to how the map was created. Upon wanting to figure that out, I realized that it will be hard to find a job in this field because more people are interested and that means less jobs. I want the job/ a job because I love video games and I want to create some for others to enjoy.…

Engineers at a New Hampshire based defense contractor, Sanders Associates, developed the first video game. It was created by Ralph Baer who was the manager of equipment design at Sanders Associates. In August 1966 when he came up with the idea of making a game for a television set. In 1967 employee Bill Rusch, assigned to the project, proposed a new game in which the hardwired logic circuit projected a spot flying across the screen. Originally the object of the game was for players to catch the spot with manually controlled dots. Over time, the players' dots evolved into paddles and the game became ping pong. Baer tried to find a buyer for his invention but had trouble finding interested parties. Finally in 1971 he struck a deal with…
