The Assignment:
What does it mean to be a hero? J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is a classic text that explore the idea of heroism, and your assignment is to write an informative essay that explains how Bilbo Baggins becomes a hero. Successful essays should 1) identify three of Bilbo’s heroic character traits, 2) explain how these traits are developed in Bilbo through the situations he faces and the ways in which he interacts with other characters, and 3) explain how these traits show that Bilbo is a hero. Remember, you must support your claims with evidence from the text in the form of quotes using MLA format.
The Format:
The essay will be five paragraphs; an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
1. Introduction: Begin with an interesting hook (not a truism). You must also include in the introduction the title of the book, the author’s name, and a brief explanation of the kind of person Bilbo is before his adventure. In addition, incorporate a central idea and thesis. The central idea is the claim you are making about Bilbo becoming a hero despite his unpromising start. The thesis contains the three reasons that you will use to support the central idea.
2. Body first two body paragraphs focus on Bilbo’s heroic character traits, explain how these traits are developed in Bilbo through the situations he faces, and they also explain how these traits prove that Bilbo is a hero. These paragraphs begin with strong topic sentences that each include a restatement of the central idea and a particular thesis point. The third body paragraph should focus on one of Bilbo’s heroic character traits, explain how this trait is developed in Bilbo through his interactions with another character or characters, and is also explains how this trait proves that Bilbo is a hero.
