Imagine lifeless, soulless corpses steadily congesting the streets of every city in the world in increasingly larger waves. T.S. Elliot analyzes society just this way in his work The Hollow Men. Each new generation is slowly degenerating into a meaningless existence reminiscent of popular movies and tv shows depicting zombies roaming the earth. While physically the human condition has improved unlike any generation before, the soul and mind may be experiencing other recessions. The Hollow Men exemplifies several ways young generations are transitioning into this zombie-like state. The modern condition is one of a life full of knowledge and objects but void of meaning. Some of the opening lines of The Hollow Men read, “We are stuffed men leaning together headpiece filled with straw.” At the forefront of Elliot’s mind probably would have been the fact that it is easy to hook up with many women, but it no longer holds the same value it used to. Also present would be the increasing trend of people who have a religion but lack spirit. In other words, they go to church and say their prayers but fail to find the meaning in them. Even more modern would be the fact that with the development of the smartphone there is now more information at the disposal of any given person; however, each generation seems to take this technology for granted and have increasingly dulled senses and drive. At any given time one can read of the atrocities occurring across the globe and the downturn of their nation but continue to carry on with their lives as normal.
