The audience expects to get goosebumps, and to be on the edge of their seats while chewing their nails. If that is what a movie of this genre causes the audience, then the producers have done their job correctly. A supernatural horror movie targets and expands upon the audience's fear. In scary movies producers use elements such as: colors, foreshadowing, symbolism, camera angles, sounds, etc. to heighten the suspense and scare factor of the film. In Robert Zemeckis’s films he uses these techniques to scare the audience and build up the suspense. Zemeckis specifically uses foreshadowing and camera angles, in What Lies Beneath, to generate suspense and prove that everything is not always as it seems.…

Genre theory is the “stereotype” of the genre. Meaning, what one expects from a specific genre. For instance, a horror film is expected to illicit fear in the audience, while a musical is expected to have minimal spoken dialogue, and a dramatic tragedy is expected to have conflicts and end in a tragic or sad manner. Genre conventions and attributes contribute to the fulfillment of the genre theory. The genre conventions or techniques of a horror film such as recurring plot points featuring multiple murders, keeps the film grounded in the genre of horror, and gives definition and depth to the film. While the genre attributes or specific details like the back story of the main character that lead to the villainy, refine and accentuate the genre. When genre conventions and attributes are balanced, it is possible to cohesively combine multiple genres that would not normally go together, like horror, musical, and dramatic tragedy. An excellent example of the balance of these three genres is Sweeney Todd (Burton, 2007).…

Horror and thriller are a long standing favorite media type of our kind. A good scare that lingers in our minds sticks with us in ways other genres do not. The interest can span through movies and novels which both deliver results in different ways. Horrors and thrillers also affect our bodies while watching, though also differently. The reasons of why we like to be scared continue to be studied, but a few theories have emerged that are all partially accepted. American horror films during the 1960 's revolutionized the entire genre. According to Andrew Tudor, prior to the 1960 's, horror had maintained a series of relatively straightforward distinctions between "self and other". There was some sense of faith in authority and in the possibility of a survival or escape. Therefore, many of these films had a general tendency to resolve narrative conflicts. In the 1960 's however, these features started to disappear. It became easy to relate to the "evil" characters. The loss of faith in authorities and the possibilities of any hope gave rise to horror narratives in which quarrels and problems are rarely resolved. Instead, conflict seems to move unavoidably towards complete social or personal breakdown (Tudor 68-74).…

To most people, horror is the genre that makes them become gregariously incautious, meaning that they treat others without respect. The majority believe that this leads to the massive killings you see on the news. This is the opposite approach a screenwriter takes upon writing a screenplay. The screenwriter wants to allow one viewer to openly express their internal fears with other members of the audience through screams and shrills. Before horror was even meant to hit the big screen, it originated long before then back in 1896.…

The conjuring is a horror story with a twist of terror. In the beginning we don’t actually see the spirits, which allows us to use our imagination (terror). Towards the middle and the end of the movie, we see all the ghosts and spirits, but there aren’t any nasty details (horror). The conjuring is a supernatural movie, since we are introduced to creepy things, which can’t be found in the real world (unless you believe in spirits and exorcism). Under the category ‘supernatural’ we find the sub-genre ‘the marvelous’ since we are faced with something we can’t explain, but choose to accept the supernatural as being real.…
