The Horse Dealer's Daughter
Many stories hold immense truth and meaning behind the words on a page. Water symbolism specifically, is used to represent a form of rebirth. No matter how it may be used, whether through submersion or simple rain, it can signify great meaning for the story written. Submersion symbolism, specifically water, represents ideas of rebirth. It could mean renewal, where one is cleansed of their past or old self, or it could mean death of one leading to life for others. The time period where “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” takes place, women did not have much for them. They could grow up to be a wife/mother but that’s about it. Not much else for women to do with themselves. The story, Beloved, takes place right after slavery, where people were very cautious around people’s past. It was not talked about, due to the horrific event, which causes a big problem in the story. Both, Mabel Pervin, from “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” by D.H. Lawrence, and Sethe, from Beloved by Toni …show more content…
Beloved seems to be separating Denver from Sethe as she becomes more deceptive and secretive: “As long as her mother did not interfere, she was a model of compassion, turning waspish, though, when Sethe tried to help.” Sethe’s own daughter is becoming sneaky and hiding things which results in a terrible family relationship, unlike Mabel who builds a relationship. In all, Sethe is suffering from Beloved’s rebirth, whether it is physical, mental, or just simply destroying a relationship. Although Sethe’s experience post rebirth had drained her, Mabel’s experience had done the opposite. Both mental transformations provide examples on how they changed for both good and bad.
Conclusion
Although Mabel and Sethe are reborn through water submersion, the result from each differ in the fact that Mabel’s transformation had positive effects and Sethe’s transformation had negative

The book The Farming of Bones is a constant reminder of loss and regret shared by almost all of the characters. The story is a tragic event in itself but the character’s pain doesn’t start with the massacre. Throughout the story, water is a reoccurring entity not always shown in a positive light. This is what makes the ending scene difficult to interpret and the significance varies between readers. In the ending scene, Amabelle is laying naked in the river “waiting for a new dawn” not really hinting if this new dawn is in heaven or still on earth. Personally, I believe Danticat is insinuating Amabelle is preparing herself for death from the way he uses water in other situations that do not turn out well for the characters.…

With respect to water, the sea was the main comparison to the main character of the plot. While the plot itself was somewhat fragmented, a continous reference to the sea in metaphorical like format portrayed a sense of longing and restless. The references to the sea seemed to be a way to physically envision just how free and happy the soul can be if it is just left alone in truth and solidarity. The love that Mrs Pontellier seems to grow into can be related to a wave of the ocean or the wave of a tsunami, where the more water it gathers the more powerful it becomes, and so we see that her constant reference to water ,is the only way she can constantly refer her present scenario in terms that noone else but herself might be able to comprehend.…

Along with providing sustenance, water often symbolizes a cleansing or a baptism. In this novel, drinking water is often difficult to find, and the water for bathing is even more rare. In fact, at one point the young Jacob's only option is to shower himself in filthy water left over from the animals. Similarly, several characters find it difficult to find redemption for past mistakes:…

The ocean acts as a symbol of a child’s best friend, encouraging the child to the fearless and chase adventure. However, the father views the ocean differently, as he sees the ocean being dangerous. As stated in the text “I have since become a salt-water man, but sometimes in summer there are days when the restlessness of the tides and the fearful cold of the sea water and the incessant wind which blows across the afternoon and into the evening make me wish for placidity of a lake in the woods” (pg 1). This quote shows that the father is fearful of the sea, and seeks the comfort of the lake because how the waves of the ocean represent no control. Summer symbolizes the father’s favorite time of the year, Summertime, oh summertime, pattern of the indelible, the fade proof lake, the woods unshatterable, the pasture with the sweet fern and the juniper forever and ever, summer without end; this was the background, and the life along the shore was the design, the cottages with their innocent and tranquil design...”(pg3). This shows the father using imagery to describe his childhood trips to the lake to bond with his father period. The positive descriptions of beauty of their annual trips show s the happy memories he associates with the season. He becomes lost in these memoires and is convinced that times does not exist. “That the…

The short story “A secret lost in the water“written by Roch Carrier, holds a deeper meaning to it, than one can skim through and see. After carefully reading the story, I believe the theme of this short story is the significance of the water. As the story progresses, we find the talent that the narrator states that only his father mastered, focused on finding water, by using a mere alder branch. When the father passes this talent or gift to his disengaged son, as the son grows old the son forgets his father’s talent. The symbol, Water has several unique meanings to it: one being, not all fathers’s gifts can be passed down to his child, the other being water is crucial to mankind, and finally the gift of the father is lost in the water.…

My first response after reading this story is that the two is headed for despair. Mabel again does not know what she is going to do. To save a life, the noble doctor has hurled himself into a vast disagreement. The conflict in this story is that Mabel does not have anywhere to go after her family loses their housing estate. Mable has been the concierge of the home and now with everything gone and the older siblings going their own way, she is left alone. The conflict is resolved to a certain degree, because she has discovered a new life path in the noble doctor. Then again, the conflict will once again surface because the two of them are very hesitant if marriage is the correct thing to do. To me at the time that this story takes place, the correct thing to do generally after seeing…

While Sethe’s experience with cruelty drives her to fear her past, Beloved’s symbolic representation of those who lost their “voices” to the same cruelty drives her to pull Sethe back to her painful memories. While Sethe becomes victim to Beloved’s tie with the past, embracing the memories she’s chosen to ignore is what brings her back to the present and leave “Beloved” behind - but not forgotten. Beloved and Sethe’s paradoxical relationship represents the cruelness of slavery and those affected by it, and Morrison utilizes that relationship to convey the theme of balancing the past and present to move on with…

The Red Pony by John Steinbeck is an unusual novel that lacks a typical storyline and doesn’t flow from chapter to chapter like someone would expect. The protagonist of the story, Jody, learns about death, birth, illness, old age, and other important facts of life, which are most of the time not the most enjoyable lessons to learn. The two men who are role models in Jody’s life are his father, Carl Tiflin, and the stable hand, Billy Buck; however, Carl Tiflin is a very harsh father who struggles to show emotions such as love, praise, or even disappointment. Billy Buck is more capable of showing emotion, as well as being able to spend time with Jody and help him get the most out of the things he goes through and learn from them. Throughout the novel, Jody struggles to earn the praise and approval of each, but unlike Billy Buck, his father continuously fails to fulfill the need of acceptance.…

    Dead River Quotes

The author uses the character Cyn, words and actions to reveal the theme: the fear of death is crippling. For example, Cyn once said, “Unfortunately, it wasn’t. So I guess that means it will be the tenth anniversary of my mom’s death.” The meaning of this quote is that unfortunately Cyn’s mother had died at the drowned in a river. However, she feels as if it isn’t so because she feels as if her mother is still there. Additionally, she later says, ”Please take me gently down the stream where I can't be hurt. Somehow I can’t escape the thoughts of icy cold water and death even when writing.” This quote means that the death of her mother in the cold frigid water still haunts her and that when her mother was carried away that she was taken to heaven or some other after life where she could not be harmed. These examples have shown that this theme has been shown throughout…
