The House Of Sand And Fog: Aristotle, Hegel, And Nietzsche
The House of Sand and Fog fits the three theorists. Aristotle’s theory fits The House of Sand and Fog because the film has a hero. In The House of Sand and Fog, Behrani is seen as the hero. His dream of being able to provide for his family by himself represents the essence of his tragic condition. Driven through this spirit to want to provide the best for his family, Behrani does not realize the cost of his dream. This paper will discuss the ideas of Aristotle, Hegel, and Nietzsche while examining The House of Sand and Fog. In The House of Sand and Fog, Behrani’s flaw is that he has set his expectations on what will be for his family too high and does not know where or how to configure these dreams to help his family. Behrani sometimes feels guilt for taking Kathy’s home away from her, since it was given to her by her dad, who died. Behrani is under great stress and pressure to care for his family in America after fleeing from Iran. While his son is clinging on to hope, telling him that he will save some food for the father, the man accepts the approaching death serenely. His change in stance is clearly demonstrated through him using the very words of his wife: “it[death]’s here”(56)(278). However, the difference still remains. While the wife had wanted to take the son, who symbolizes hope, with her, the husband says that he can’t(279) and encourages the boy to go on. This, the possession of hope, is the decisive distinction between the couple’s stance on death.…

In House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III, the author states an epigraph in the beginning of the novel from (“ The Balcony” by Octavio Paz): “Beyond myself/ somewhere/ I wait for my arrival.” This epigraph defines ones sense of self and Behrani, Kathy, and Lester in House of Sand and Fog all have a sense of self in some way. It may not be clear at first but the author burn’s an image of each character’s personality into the readers head. By the end of the novel it becomes quite clear of which character feels right at home with their sense of self and that Lester has the clearest sense of self.…

The argument is also sound. I have already proven its validity, now I must show that the conclusion is actually true. If Aristotle is going to claim that one cannot reach a state of happiness without being engaged in virtuous action, then it does logically follow that this type of unfailing virtue that Aristotle so vividly describes cannot possibly be reached without contemplative action. Some opposing views of Aristotle say that a life totally based off acts of contemplation is not realistic in our world. But Aristotle is careful to note, in response to this issue, that of course, living a life fully dedicated towards contemplation is too high of a life for humans (Bk. X, Ch. 7). Rather, contemplation is a divine, internal presence within a person. When situations arise that do not…

Literature has played an important role in our attempt to understand reality, and it does this through portraying thinking patterns and social norms that are existent and important within a society. In this sense, literature is important because it portrays different stages that man encounters in life; some of the great literary work provides society with a certain level of guidance through life. Reading literature entails more than just acquiring knowledge which too is important but it goes further into giving us different contexts that help us in understanding life. There is a great variety of literary work that one can read in order to acquire a certain level of understanding life as we have mentioned before; in this essay though we have decided to focus on two very influential readings in the prism of literature. The first one being that by Confucius entitled Analects and the second reading by Machiavelli entitled The Prince. We will be trying to compare the two authors based on different themes and concepts; but before doing that we must acquire a certain level of background about both the two authors and the two readings.…

A relativist would react to “What makes you happy might be one thing, but what makes another person happy could be entirely different, so do not impose your lifestyle on other people” by agreeing with the statement about not inflicting your lifestyle on someone else. Relativists believe you cannot urge morality on others. Even if it is someone who you share a primary relationship with, you can not make any judgement on what decisions they make. Relativists do not judge others, so if something very immoral makes you happy, a relativist can not impose on your choice of being immoral. Relativism says that all culture is good and all culture is bad; it’s the same thing as happiness, it can be good or bad but you can not judge a persons happiness whether it is good or bad. Overall, a relativist would never impose on someone’s lifestyle even if something totally different makes them happy, or even if what makes one happy is completely wrong and immoral.…

    Hegel: Master and Servant

In feudalism there was a separation of classes, such as the peasants from the kings and the noblemen from the middle class. “Each individual has his position; he knows, on the whole what a lawful and honorable course of conduct it is.” (Baird 76). Shown by this quote, there is still an ethical statute of status in society one must have. How Hegel would put why people would be segregated into different classes is because conformity is part of universal reason in which humans are human agents of universal spirit. Absolute reason and spirit is free movement and self defined, but in relation to other objects. The universal spirit gets to know itself by manifesting itself into other human beings and thus creates self development through the human. In the 19th century there is still a division of class between the “masters” who have superiority over the “servant”. this has been created by absolute spirit to recognize itself further in a historical sense. All though there are different stages of the master than the servant in which comes to recognize one’s self and the other.…
