The House of the Spirits Essay In the book “The House of the Spirits”, Isabel Allende described a complicated and confusing family which mainly centers around Esteban and Clara. On one hand, the title “The Three Marias” represents the three major women characters, Clara, Blanca and Alba. On the other hand, Esteban, Jaime and Nicolas also forms another line that has three characters. This kind of triangular family relationship are used throughout the whole book for the purpose of presenting magical realism to the readers. Clara is the most important character of the mysterious side. “Clara was extremely precocious and had inherited the runaway imagination of all the women in her family on her mother’s side. This was evident from the questions she asked , to which no one knows the answers.”(8). Clara’s difference is not only her ability to move things, tell the fortune and talk to spirits but also her view as well as attitudes towards the outside world. Unlike Rosa’s indifferent although she is also on the mysterious side, Clara actually has a strong curiosity to many things. She likes Barrabas and Uncle Marco and cares about Ferula are all evidences that she do care the world around her though in a different way. Her ability mostly comes from the spirits which means there is really an explanation to her power even it sounds crazy to many others. Clara provides a special view which transcends normal and perfectly gives readers the impact at the beginning of the book. Nicolas is interested in the spirits too, however, Clara makes fun of him by saying “If you can’t understand how the telephone works...how do you expect to understand miracles?”(219). Nicolas is mysterious in a sense that neither Clara nor Rosa does. On one hand, he stays steadily on the ground and fits well in the realistic world, on the other hand, he pursuit the spiritual world that he can never really understand. However hard he tries, Nicolas can never achieve the other world like Clara
