The House On Mango Street Identity
Identity, it is one of the innumerable lessons a human has to learn and find out oneself. In the novel The House On Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, it shows an internal struggle with the main character trying to discover what identifies her. Throughout this novel, the main character, Esperanza, substantiates that she has no real home since she migrates a lot. Incidentally, this leads to several experiences in one home, to where she constantly aggravates to know how she identifies (Cisneros). For instance, one of the extensive actions that manifest Esperanza’s ambition for self-identity is exhibited when she is always seeking for a house that will identify her. Meanwhile, Esperanza has made the wish that she wants to move out and get a new house, one lady tells her something that kept Esperanza thinking about her identity. Furthermore, the elderly appraises Esperanza that she should never forget what she lived on Mango Street because it is what is constructing her and it will always be a part of Esperanza’s personality. After these words were spoken, the author says, “They all looked at me as if I was the one that was crazy and made me feel ashamed (Cisneros 105).” Conversely, Esperanza is revealing a change in mind where she realizes that she is so busy trying to identify who she is that she forgets that the situations she is living in the present are the ones building her character (Cisneros). In addition, Esperanza also says that she wants to belong to a house that is for her. Esperanza proclaims, “...the house I belong but do not belong to….I am too strong for her to keep me here forever. One day I will go away (Cisneros 110).” This quote expresses a dramatic change in the character Esperanza is. Even though she realizes that Mango Street is a part of her, she wants to be better and to find who she truly is. As a matter of fact, this emphasizes Esperanza’s search for identity because she wants to keep getting out of her comfort zone and explore her personality that she knows undeniably
