Following the wake of the Pulse Shooting in Orlando, the Democrats in the House of Representatives staged a sit-in protest as an attempt to force their Republican counterparts into voting for stricter gun legislation. The legislation in question would ban suspected terrorists from purchasing guns, in addition to requiring universal background checks prior to the purchase of arms. Despite the attempt, the Republicans of the House failed to vote on the new legislation, and thus, barred it from passing. But what was most notable from this protest were the impactful speeches and arguments made on both sides of the aisle throughout its duration.…
In my opinion is I agree that the president has usurped the constitiutional power of the Congress. I agree this statement because he is wielding the most pontent legislative power. The Constitution does quote that “All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in the Congress of the United States.” Most people agree that he has usurped the Constitiutional Power of Congress. It also seems that the president seems to wield the legislative power. In Article 2, Section 3 of the Constitiution states that the president “shall take Care that the laws be faithfully executed.” Congress wields the legislative power and it seems the president is wielding that power.…
The legislators are very important to the Texas State House. The Speaker of the House is the most important house member, as they can influence the legislative agenda, as well as determine the fate of legislative pieces and the positions each member holds…
Since the beginning, the relationship between the presidency and Congress has been a difficult one. The framers put into place a system of checks and balances to help make sure that there would always be such a struggle. The distinctive “tension between one branch writing laws and budgets and the other branch carrying out the laws and spending the money has been” (Professional Development) an essential characteristic of the American government. Although the Constitution gives Congress, the power to declare war and omit money for troops and weapons, presidents stay given a broad leeway to defend the nation and wage war. Presidents have stretched this power to move without congressional approval through military interventions.…
Party Leaders as well as Whips of the House of Representatives, are elected in a “closed-door” caucus by a secret ballot. The House Majority leader’s duties may vary depending on the Speaker of the House. All Elected officials (Minority Leader, Minority Whip, Majority Leader, Majority Whip) all receive special office suites at the Capitol.…
Mr. President, and Gentlemen of the Convention. If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do, and how to do it. We are now far into the fifth year since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this Government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new -- North as well as South. Have we no tendency to the latter condition? Let any one who doubts carefully contemplate that now almost complete legal combination-piece of machinery, so as to speak-compounded of the Nebraska doctrine and the Dred Scott decision. Let him consider not only what work the ma- chinery is adapted to do, and how well adapted, but also let him study the history of its construction, and trace, if he can, or rather fail, if he can, to trace the evidence of design and concert of action among its chief architects, from the beginning. The new year of 1854 found slavery excluded from more than half the States by State constitutions, and from most of the national territory by congressional prohibition. Four days later commenced the struggle which ended in repealing that congressional prohibition. This opened all the national territory to slavery, and was the first…
In the passage from The Custom House, Hawthorne poetically describes the active abandonment of his home town Salem, whose past is riddled with tragedy and shame. He accomplishes creating a dramatic scene through his assumptions based on the townspeople's actions and elaborating upon them by adding imagery. “Scorned, as she is now by her own merchants and shipowners, who permit her wharves to crumble to ruin.” To Hawthorne this is nothing but a purely factual description of his soon to be decrepit home that he feels the need to share with the reader in order to fully elaborate and develop the…
In America, all people have the right to vote, except for women, “Woman suffrage is inevitable. Suffragists knew it before November 4, 1917; opponents afterward” (Catt 1). It is important for women to have the right to vote because all people deserve to have a say in what happens in their government. Catt believes that women should have the right to vote and wants others to agree. In “Address to Congress on Women’s Suffrage,” Carrie Chapman Catt conveys ethos to achieve the audience’s trust, pathos to engage the audience emotionally, and logos to present factual information in order to persuade the audience to believe that woman suffrage is a very important topic and should not be overlooked.…
Hypothetical: You’re 25, you’re pregnant, and you just got the promotion of a lifetime. Everything is great. That is until your boss calls you into his office. He’s disappointed. He doesn’t understand how you could be so irresponsible to get pregnant, you needed to dedicate all of your time to this position. You had so much potential and he expected more from you. You go home with a box of your belongings and tears in your eyes. Before us we have a similar situation, virtually the only difference is the ages of our pregnant young women. She is your ASB president, she is pregnant, and she deserves that position. She deserves to stay president despite her pregnancy because biases and assumptions should not prevent her from continuing to hold…
In the world of politics, a politician’s actions are not taken very lightly. For example, politicians would have to be cautious of how they communicate to the community. They also have to be aware of the way they convey their expressions through oral speeches and through the written language. In the Senate, senators communicate through speeches and debates. When senators speak or debate, there will be some senators that would occasionally agree and disagree with other senators. When one who does not accept the idea of another, may begin what is called a filibuster.…
The government of the United States is made up of three branches: the executive branch, judicial branch, and the legislative branch. The legislative branch, called Congress, is responsible for making laws. Congress is made of two houses; the Senate and the House of Representatives. Although they have many differences, they share some similarities too.…
The president of the USA also has the power to propose legislation. In January at the start of the Congress session the president tells both houses what the main problems are and how he is planning on addressing these issues. He will tell congress what actions he and his administration are planning on taking over the next year to sort out America’s issues. However, the President cannot introduce Bills directly; a member of congress must submit the bill on behalf of the President. Congress has the power to filibuster. Filibustering, also known as talking out a bill is when congress talk at length and debate for a very long time to stop a Bill preceding to the next stage. This is another method congress uses just to limit the power of the President slightly. Congress also has the power to propose…
In most states, this position has very limited power however in Texas the individual can appoint the chairs of all senate committees, select all members of all senate committees, appoint members of the conference committees, serve as presiding officer and interpret rules, and refer all bills to committees. In addition, Lieutenant Governor has the same powers possessed by the speaker. The catch is the powers are assigned by the formal rules of the senate, which are adopted at the beginning of each session. So, in reality the what the senate gives it can take away. In conclusion, both of these positions are powerful and I believe they have too much control over the passage of…
Congressional term limits is a very controversial subject today. Many people, including our president Donald Trump, think that we need to “flush out” or get rid of the people who have been in congress for a long time. With this ambition, multiple problems arise. People who have a job should not just be pulled out because they have been in there too long. That is not a good enough reason in any case. The people working in congress have worked and worked very hard to become part of this high position. Donald Trump should open his eyes and realize what these people are doing not just for him, but for our country. Without these people working in congress our country would not be able to function. Therefore, Donald Trump should not be trying to “flush out” congressmen, but thank them for their service.…
Power is a big thing in the world today and has been for many years. Having power can make you control people or even intimidate people very easily. Congress and The Quest For Power is going to talk about what and why the congress are wanting to have power. Congress will be able to have power with states etc. with the actions that they make.…
