English 12 Beowulf : Movie or Poem?
Before watching the Beowulf movie, I had the opportunity to read the poem along with ghthe class. I thought the movie was going to be a slight different from the epic poem, but that it was still going to stick to the message that the poem had given us. As we started to watch the movie, I noticed that I as completely wrong because the movie is almost completely different from the epic poem. The movie kept very few elements from the original epic poem. In the poem, Grendel attacks Heorot because he is a descendent of Cain that has been exiled into darkness. The movie let us know that Grendel was the son of Hrothgar, the king. Grendel could not attack or go against God himself, so he took it against God’s followers. In the movie, Grendel attacked Heorot because he cannot stand music and singing. Noise really bothered his head and ears. In both the movie and poem, Beowulf fights Grendel without any kind of weapons or armor because Grendel isn’t using any of that either. Beowulf wants it to be a fair fight. Beowulf tears Grendel’s arm off and hangs it up; I think to symbolize the victory. Another major difference to me, is that in the poem, Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother as soon as possible, while in the movie somehow Beowulf is seduced by her. Beowulf never kills Grendel’s mother. I think the movie producers took a really big leap in this part, it went completely different from the epic poem. Grendel’s mother is also described as a lizard-type of creature that was unappealing and unattractive. Completely opposite to the epic poem, Grendel’s mother was provocative and seductive in the movie, maybe this is the reason why Beowulf gives in to her. As a result of this matter, Beowulf becomes the father of a dragon. The epic poem never mentions about Beowulf becoming a father, he was always loyal and faithful to his wife. Finally in the poem, Beowulf returns to his homeland, where he became old and became king. Beowulf had to fight the dragon along with his knights working as a team, but instead, the knights had given up and weren’t helping him at all. Wiglaf is the only person who reaches out and helps him fight the dragon. This signifies that the Anglo-Saxon Era was coming to an end. Despite all of this, Beowulf never gives up, he fights to the end. In the movie, Beowulf never returns to his homeland, instead he becomes king of the Danes as a result of Hrothgar’s suicide. Beowulf ends up killing the dragon in both versions, but in the movie, Beowulf seemed to have lost the heroic, fearless, and courageous values. Beowulf just seemed like he had given up. Maybe it was culpability about all his lies that had finally got to him. I enjoyed reading the poem much better than watching the movie. I think the movie- producers shouldn’t have taken so much out of the original poem. They made Beowulf seem like a completely different person. The original Beowulf poem portrayed many of the Anglo-Saxon values, while in the movie, it just seemed like they didn’t portray any of them at all. I wanted to see Beowulf just like they portrayed him in the poem. I wanted to see Beowulf being an honorable and heroic figure that never gave up on it’s people.

He say he wasn't going to use weapons. I mean, in the poem, Beowulf said the reason Grendel didn't use weapons because his mind was frenzied, primal, and unorganized. This means that Grendel doesn't use any tools in combat at all. I think that includes chains and doors. If Beowulf wanted to be fair, he should have tried to take off Grendel's.. So his clothes is considered a weapon? Wow, the movie's just trying to find some excuse to have his clothes off KIDDING He used a door and a chain... And they used a weapon to pin the chain to the pole.... I've read the book and I hear the movie does a terrible job portraying the real story. Didn't he rip Grendel's arm off with his bare hands? That would have been more awesome than him running around…

The setting of the battle against Grendel’s mother and the battle against the Dragon, in the movie detracts from my understanding of the poem. When Beowulf went to face Grendel’s mother in the poem, the lair was described as a place where even a “deer hunted through the woods by a pack of hounds, a stag with great horns…prefers to die on those shores.”(Beowulf 433) instead of going into the lake. Alternatively the movie depicts the lair as a difficult place to reach, but not impossible, it appears to be less scary than that of the poem. Throughout the battle against the Dragon, ‘Beowulf’s son,’ the setting is Grendel’s mother’s lair. In the poem, the battle took place in a different place, on the contrary in the movie, it was fought in the same place where Beowulf went to talk to Grendel’s mother. The characters, the sequence of events, along with the certitude behind Grendel’s progenitor and the background of the movie lessen my original comprehension of the…

The plot of the epic poem Beowulf and the film The 13th Warrior differ greatly compared to each other. In Beowulf the main character, Beowulf set sail to the Danes land in order to defeat a monster named Grendel. In the film, the character that represents Beowulf, Buliwuf, sets out to defeat a race, not a single monster and its mother, the race of Wendols. The character defeats Grendel in the poem; but he does not defeat all of the Wendols in the film on the first attack. The character Buliwyf then defeats the Wendols on the second attack, where they kill the ‘mother.’ Both characters have to defeat a dragon, or ‘fire serpent.’ In the epic poem, Beowulf is not poisoned until he is scratched by the dragon. In the film, Buliwyf gets scratched by the mother. The characters go through turmoil; they fight for life and limb, and battle forces they did not even know existed. The plot of the story changes between both poem and film to accompany the story line and keep the reader interested; even though the main characters are different and they have different names, the whole plot as the same general idea, just in a different sequence.…

In the decade of, Beowulf there was different views and beliefs that can be viewed in this century as barbaric and brutal. The Epic of Beowulf and Beowulf and Grendel is a perfect example of the religious differences and views of the people of this particular century. (Gunnarsson, S.) (Heaney, Seamus) In Beowulf and Grendel there was a more pronounced difference in religious views than in the Epic of Beowulf done to try to be more relatable to today's society. As the epic poem Beowulf involves arms getting ripped off, heads being decapitated, and monsters being slayed, the movie Beowulf has more of a detailed, twisted view. Reading and watching Beowulf presented multiple differences. Although Grendel and the other monsters were just known as villains in the written version, the movie included more symbolic characters.…

The novel and the epic differ in Grendel’s role as character and hero. In Gardner's story Grendel represents an anti-hero, so he has a heroic sense about him but he doesn't possess the usual qualities of a hero. He isn't nice, but the audience does not want him to fail. In "Beowulf" Grendel represents evil and a villain, he’s not portrayed as a hero, but a destroyer with, ” his heathen soul,” (Beowulf) and when he died, “there Hell received him,” (Beowulf). The ideas of evil and heroism are presented differently in both stories, because the anti-hero in one story is the villain in another. The stories differ in their portrayal of heroism, especially in what defines a hero. In “Beowulf” a hero is someone who saves the popular view or the majority, and overcomes anything that comes against humanity. In "Grendel" a hero cannot be defined with clear lines of good and evil; heroic deeds are seen through different perspectives.…

There are a lot of differences the two stories have to one another. In the book King Hrothgar seems as if he would be more put together and a gentleman but in the book he is a drunk and messy man. In the book they make Grendel react to the word of God and that is what angers him and makes him want to kill and destroy the hall. In the movie he attacks because the loud music hurts his ears, and that makes him shrink if it gets too loud which is how Beowulf was able to cut off his arm and kill Grendel in the movie. Another difference that was very noticed was that in the movie Grendel’s mother is very sexy and seductive and she convinces Beowulf to sleep with her and have a child and he will have all power and the whole Kingdom of Denmark, which is what had happened to Hrothgar too. Which means that Grendel was actually Hrothgar’s son that he created when he was seduced by Grendel’s Mother when he went to kill her. In the book that never happened, he actually killed Grendel with the sword that Unferth had given him. The movie added a lot of different details to make the story much more interesting and adding a sexy monster definitely grabbed the people’s attention. Especially if Angelina Jolie played Grendel’s Mother's…

Several differences can be seen throughout the old-English Beowulf (Heaney) and the modern-day film Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson) due to the cultural difference between the Middle ages and Modern time. More details entered the film to appeal to a more modern audience that requires reason and details. The old English poem held no use for complexity to tantalize the reader. Additions that add complexity to Grendel’s character in Beowulf and Grendel include backstories and new characters.…

Beowulf is a very courageous character and recounts his acts of courage to every person who will listen. In the poem Beowulf tells of his previous courageous actions in destroying a tribe of giants, defeating sea monsters in the night and returning from battle covered in his enemies blood. Beowulf has come to King Hrothgar to fight an ogre. A monster that has brought misery and death to the Danes for many years. This ogre, Grendel, killed thirty of Hrothgar’s men and caused the great mead hall of Herot to be closed. Beowulf tells King Hrothgar “the monster’s scorn of men Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I” (lines 262-264) Therefore Beowulf intends to fight the Grendel without his armor or his sword. Beowulf may be so courageous because he believes so strongly in fate shaping his successes in the past. Beowulf believes that if it is his fate to win against Grendel then he will win. If it is his fate to die…

The human brain is unique. It is part of your central nervous system which contains billions or nerve cells and trillions of support cells. The brain is the central computer that controls all bodily functions; the nervous system relays messages from the brain to different parts of the body. It gives us the power to think, plan, speak, and imagine. It controls body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. The brain also accepts information about the world around you from your five senses. It handles physical motion when walking, standing or sitting, and it lets you think, dream, reason, and experience emotions. The brain has five key parts that work together to make your brain function; the cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem, pituitary gland, and the hypothalamus. All this fits inside your brain which is about the size of a head of cauliflower.…

The poem called Beowulf was composed some time between the middle of the seventh and the end of the tenth century of the first millennium, in the language that is today called Anglo-Saxon or Old English. It is a heroic narrative, more than three thousand lines long, concerning the deeds of a Scandinavian prince, also called Beowulf, and it stands as one of the foundation works of poetry in English. The fact that the English language has changed so much in the last thousand years means, however, that the poem is now generally read in translation and mostly in English courses at schools and universities. This has contributed to the impression that is was written (as Osip Madelstam said of The Divine Comedy) ‘on official paper’,…

One of the oldest and most important remains of the Anglo-Saxon literature is the epic poem of Beowulf. Its age is unknown; but it comes from somewhere between the 7th and the 10th centuries. It is like a piece of ancient armour; rusty and battered, and yet strong. The style of the epic poem is likewise simple- perhaps one should say, austere. Beowulf is indeed the most successful Old English poem because in it the elements, language, metre, theme, structure, are all most nearly in harmony. The author seems mainly bent upon telling us how his Sea-Goth slew Grendel and the Fire-drake.…
