they were. This is when Katniss’ sister, Prim, got pulled from the basket and Katniss didn’t want her sister to participate so she volunteered herself for her.
This was a memorable moment in the book because it showed how Katniss had a lot of courage. Another memorable part of the book is at the end when the only two people left are Peeta and Katniss and the Capital says that only one can live. Since either one of them didn’t want to kill the other they both took poisonous berries and as they were about to eat them the Capital yelled from them to stop saying they had both won The Hunger Games. This was a memorable part of the book because it was showing that neither one, Katniss nor Peeta, wanted to die without the other one so they both decided to die together if they had to die. Since the government didn’t want both to die either they declared both tributes as winners of the Hunger …show more content…
Games.
In the book discussion my group and I had I thought it was a very productive discussion.
Some of they key points my group brought up was memorable moments throughout the book. For example on page 20-23, when Katniss volunteered as a tribute for Prim. We all agreed that this was a very memorable part of the book. Also another memorable part of the book was on page 358 when both Peeta and Katniss won the Hunger Game. We said this was a memorable moment of the book because Katniss and Peeta are from the same district, district 12, and they both had won the Hunger Games. A part of the book we all said we disliked was when Peeta went into a different group going against Katniss. We said we didn’t like this part because he was trying to kill Katniss but in a way he was helping her stay alive too. Some of the themes we discussed are having trust in each other. We said this was a theme because Katniss trusted Peeta not to stab her in the back. Also when they were eating berries Katniss trusted him that they weren’t the poisonous berries. Fire and the mocking jay were main symbols in the book. We said fire was a symbol because when Katniss and Peeta game in to the ceremony presenting themselves for the first time in public and in front of the judges, they were set on fire. We said the mocking jay was another main symbol because it presented defiance and rebellion again the government. Also because before Katniss went into the games her mom gave her a mocking jay pin to wear
throughout the games. Some literary devices we brought up during the discussion were flashbacks, mood, and irony. We said that these were literary devices in the book because of when Katniss was with Rue she kept having flashback to Prim at home. Also mood because of how Katniss and Peeta had a romance throughout the story. Lastly irony because out of the thousands of people in the bowl to be chosen for the Hunger Games, Prims name was picked out and Katniss volunteered
My reaction of the discussion my group had was pretty well for our first book discussion of the year. I thought it went well because even though we struggled to keep the conversations and topics going everyone participated and encouraged other people to participate if they had not said some thing for a while. I also think it went well because we got through the whole packet each person saying what they had thought was memorable, something they loved or disliked and the themes and symbols they thought were presented throughout the book. It also went well because everyone was ready and presented himself or herself as ready for the discussion we had. Next book discussion we have will probably be smoother and better than the one we had this time because we know what to expect and say next time. Also we can be more encouraging and expect more for the discussion.
