The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel that depicts what life would be like in future day America if a dictator was to be in power. The hunger games is a competition in where 24 tributes from the 12 districts of panem are forced to fight in an arena to the death until one sole remaining victor remains. That victor is crowned and then gets to live the rest of his or her life in peace and wealth in victor’s village. On the day of the 74th reaping, Katniss Everdeen and her sister Primrose are inside their home getting ready for the reaping. Prim is distraught about the idea of even going to the reaping so Katniss comforts her and tells her the odds are in her favor because she only has one ticket in the raffle.

Katniss has 60 seconds to decide what she will go for in the Cornucopia. As soon as the gong rings Peeta runs into the woods. Confused with what to do, Katniss tries to grab a small backpack. Another male tribute tries to steal the bag but he gets stabbed by Clove. The Bloodbath only lasted for 24 minutes but left 11 tributes dead. With nothing valuable, Katniss tries to avoid all tributes at all costs. She continues this strategy, but the gamemakers are not happy with her location, so they set part of the arena on fire to get her closer to the other tributes. During the 3rd day of the games she gets bombarded by the career pack. The careers are a group of tributes who have been training their entire lives for the games. Katniss is able to climb a tree and the careers send their leader, Cato, to go up for Katniss. As he is climbing, Katniss notices that Peeta is with the career pack. Cato falls down several feet and then tries to shoot her with an arrow, to which he is unsuccessful. The next day Katniss meets a little girl named Rue. She instructs her to cut down a tracker jacker nest above the sleeping careers. Katniss begins to saw at the branch, but she ends up getting stung. She does
