The Hunger Games Effie Trinket Character Analysis

Effie Trinket is a dynamic character, who plays a seemingly unimportant role in Suzanne Collins’ novel “The Hunger Games”. It is only seemingly unimportant because she supports the main character, Katniss Everdeen, and boosts her self-esteem before the Games, which contributes to Katniss’ victory. At first, one might be under the impression that Effie is shallow and egocentric. This is due to her deep caring for her appearance, which is shown by her explicit described dyed hair, her extravagant outfits and make-up. She is also very concerned about the way Haymitch’s drunken appearance at the Reaping makes her look because they represent the same District. Effie also hopes that she is going to get a better District in the upcoming year.
This is implied by the fact that she freaks out, when she hears about Katniss’ flip-out at the evaluation. It shows that she is greatly worried about Katniss’ not getting any sponsors, which might lead to her dying early on in the Games. If she was truly egocentric, she would not worry about that anymore, because Katniss’ and Peeta’s occurrence at the opening ceremony got her and her District more than enough attention and appreciation to get a better District in the following Games. Furthermore, she shows her concern about her tributes, which emphasizes her empathetic side even more. On page 125 it is stated that she said goodbye to Peeta and Katniss with “actual tears in her eyes”.
