The Hunger Games Chapter 1
The story starts in district twelve, the narrator wakes up in her house, where she lives with her mother and her little sister Prim. This day is very special. It’s the day of the reaping. Today is the day the contestants for the annual Hunger Games from district 12 are picked out of the bowl. There are picked a boy and a girl from every of the 12 districts to compete in the hunger games. In the poor district 12, everybody looks forward to this day with fear of being selected for the games. Every boy and girl at the age of 12 to 18 can be selected for the Hunger Games.
The narrator called Katniss lives with her mother and little sister, she has been the breadwinner of the family since her father died in a mine explosion. Most of the men in the district 12 works in the mines and it is a very dangerous job. Katniss’ father died when she was 11 and she gets some nightmares about him 5 years after. Katniss is going to the woods, where her best friend Gale waits, they are hunting partners and they are very much in the same situation with their families. They are both the breadwinners of their families and they have to hunt and take care of their smaller siblings.
Gale has brought some bread today, it’s very rare to get some good bread because people can’t afford it. This day is special though and he got the bread for a squirrel he had shot.
They talk about running away, to avoid going to the hunger games, they could do it and live in the woods, but they think of their family and how they would survive without them. They go home to get dressed for the reaping, everybody is nicely dressed on this day. When Katniss comes home her mother and Prim is already dressed. Prim is wearing the cloth Katniss wore at her first reaping, this is Prims first reaping. At 1 o’clock they go to the square for the reaping.
