The Tinker Standard describes the right of a student has to exercise freedom of speech through symbolic gestures. It was first conceived when students Mary Beth Tinker and John Tinker began wearing black armbands with the “peace” symbol as a form of passive protest against the war in Vietnam, a very controversial topic at the time. When the staff of the school they attended suspended them for wearing the armbands, on the grounds that they were detrimental to student’s learning, the pair along with Christopher Eckhart, one of the other three students to be suspended for wearing the arm bands, filed a complaint against the school for impeding on their 1st Amendment Right, the right to freedom of speech. Not satisfied with the District Court’s decision condoning the school’s actions, they appealed to the United States Supreme Court where the decision was overturned and Tinker Standard was established.…

In today’s society, a lot of people tend to take for granted what they have. Every once and a while, something drastic will ensue them, and that’s when they finally grasp what’s been right in front of them the whole time. In many different societies, for example the societies in The Hunger Games, and Anthem, the individuals that are living there are forced to listen to the ruler, or rulers, do not have an opinion in some of the choices that are made for them, and are also forced to accept the rule of selflessness. Based on the themes of the Power of Knowledge, the Image of Self, and the Consequences of Free Will, the novella, Anthem, and the film, The Hunger Games express similarities and differences regarding the dangers of a Totalitarian government and its effect on its citizens in order to teach the reader to be blessed that they have a democracy and that the individuals of the United States have it really easy compared to other countries, and even societies in books or movies.…

When a gladiator was disabled or disarmed, the spectators turned up their thumbs to indicate that the vanquished man should be spared. If they turned their thumbs…

Over the long hot summer I read an interesting book written by Suzanne Collins called The Hunger Games. It is an inspirational book about a small district in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem in North America. The Hunger Games is an annual lottery in which one boy and one girl aged 12–18 from each of the twelve districts are selected to compete in a live televised battle to the death. This is an underdog story of Katniss Everdeen who is from district 12 a coal-mining district that is the poorest and least populated district. She is able to come out victorious and find her love Peeta Mellark who is also from district 12. This story shows people our age that even through adversity if you work hard enough you can do anything you want to.…

What we now know as North America wasn’t always known as North America. North America during post-apocalyptic times was known as Panem. Panem comes from a Latin phrase which means bread and circuses. The phrase was used to describe people or a person using entertainment to distract others from more important issues, which in this case would be problems in the districts. Being as though Panem is located on the western side of North America and the Capitol of Panem was located in what we know as the Rocky Mountains. Panem had a dictatorship form of government. Before the second rebellion it was ran by President Snow. Snow was the President/leader of Panem for about 25 years. He lived in the Capitol and ruled over all of the districts.…
