Out of the four biographies of Jesus that have been preserved in the New Testament, the Gospel of John is the latest-written. In this report I will be analysing this Gospel in both a literary and thematic point of view. “What was John trying to get across?” and “What is the meaning behind Jesus’ miracles?” are two of the key arguments I am going to make.
The book of John contains a narrative history about the mystery of the identity of Jesus. Supposedly written by the apostle/disciple John around 85-95 AD, the book gives us context of His origin and nature.
• John introduces Jesus in the first chapter of the book as someone who’s “more than just a man”. “In the beginning …show more content…
During this time He preached and claimed that He is God. “I am the Father are one” (10:30) He established his power and leadership to his growing number of followers.
• In the chapters 13 to 17, John describes details of the Last Supper with Jesus and His disciples. Here, Jesus prayed for himself, His disciples, and all future believers. These chapters marked the 24-hour period before Jesus’ death.
• The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus happened in chapters 18 to 21. The Gospel of John finishes off here where he writes one of the most amazing truths about Jesus, “And there are many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written” (21:25).
John himself states that the purpose of this gospel is to show that Jesus of Nazareth was Christ, the Son of God, and that all those who believed in him will have eternal …show more content…
He doesn’t sugarcoat the reality and destiny of Jesus’ life but rather accepts it in full and gives all his loyalty without question. This reflects on the way that us Catholics should behave. We must strive to give him our complete trust and show no shame in doing so.
Thematic Analysis
Thematic Analysis emphasizes pinpointing and recording recurring patterns within a data, which in this case is a body of text. By thematically analysing the Book of John, we would be able to clearly see the patterns and recurring themes of the miracles Jesus has performed. More exactly, why did He perform them? The purpose for this method is to discover what you can about a certain theme, doing your best to come up with an answer to your question.
John 4:46-54 (Jesus cures an official’s son), John 5:1-15 (Jesus cures a sick man), John 9:1-12 (Jesus cures a man who was blind since birth) are examples of parables of when Jesus performed acts of miracles. Through these passages, we may be able to notice a pattern that connects one to the other.
