Because of this, she has no mercy for those who oppose her. In The Odyssey, she assists Odysseus with his revenge against the suitors. Though few of the men are awful people, her plan spares none of them, and even the good men are slaughtered for the actions of the rotten few. We can see this mercilessness once again in Metamorphoses when Athena challenges Arachne. When she is beaten in the weaving contest, Athena decimates Arachne’s work and physically assaults the young girl, causing Arachne to attempt suicide. She does show some sympathy by sparing Arachne’s life and turning her into a spider, however; this is hardly a pleasant fate. Though she is referred to as a rather pretty goddess, it is vital not to provoke her anger, lest one would want to end up a pile of steaming…

A big problem with the gods and goddesses was their self absorption; they were extremely prideful and vain. Little did they know this pride would inevitably cause the Trojan War. It all started when the goddess of discord threw a golden apple with the words “for the fairest” inscribed upon it to Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Since each of them thought they were they were the most beautiful, they needed some one to judge their beauty. But Zeus was too smart to agree to this so he told them to ask Paris, a handsome Trojan prince. The goddesses desperately wanted the golden apple, so each of them promised Paris a brilliant gift if he should choose them. Hera promised to make him a powerful ruler; Athena promised him wisdom and victory in battle; and Aphrodite promised him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta. Paris just couldn’t resist Aphrodite’s offer and he gave her the golden apple and with Aphrodite’s help he seduced Helen, who was Prince Menelaus’ wife. Unbelievably, these three goddesses were so prideful and vain that they would actually cause the Trojan War all for the sake of owning a golden apple that belonged to the fairest of them all.…

Eris moves about cunningly, seemingly insignificant at first sight. Yet it is evident that her trivial actions result in detrimental consequences. This can be clearly understood from the disastrous Trojan War. As a proponent of war and discord, Eris basks in slaughter (Atsma). Undeniably, Eris isn’t the epitome of a compassionate goddess. “She is insatiable in her desire for bloodshed, and after all the gods have withdrawn from the battle-field, she still remains rejoicing over the havoc that has been made.” (Smith). While she is despised, Eris is feared and respected for her perpetual and vindictive wrath (Stewart). Although Eris is often described as ruthless and harmful, Eris is also credited as the goddess who prods a lazy man to work. This lazy man compares himself to his successful neighbor and envies his accomplishments. The lazy man is then encouraged to work diligently. In such cases, Eris may be considered a friend to mortals…
