Because of many political processes, and economic reasons in different countries, many people have to leave their native countries and settle down in new places. Of course, they bring knowledge of their first language and culture. In their home, their children should acquire the new language and assimilate into the new culture. In addition, people have a possibility to retain native language in their families. Unfortunately, the majority of immigrant children have a tendency not to learn their parents language. They can’t speak this language, and, obviously, they don’t know how to read or write. These facts bring many people to the next question. As a recent immigrant myself I see a great value in the programs like cultural orientation for the new members of our community. Ascentria provides services for people of various cultural and social backgrounds. Lack of knowledge about the peculiarities of American culture, social norms as well as the ways this society functions can not only put the newcomers in uncomfortable situations, but also compromise their safety and security. I believe it is critical to provide the people who are to make this country their new home with all the necessary information, which would help their adaptation and integration into the American society.…

Title The biggest challenges of being an immigrant is knowing the language of the country that you are in, trying to communicate with people and getting bullied. It is really hard for an immigrant coming to america to learn english and especially speak english. Like in many languages from Asia there are seriant ways to pronounce a word and if you pronounce that word in a different way it could have a whole different meaning. Another reason why it is very challenging for an immigrant speaking and learning english is because their peers might make fun of them if they pronounce a word wrong, like in the book inside out and back again the main character Hà, who is a 10 year old girl from vietnam, moved to alabama during the…

My distant cousins whom I have never met welcomed us with open arms. I have not felt so much joy in such a long time. My cousins took us home to their little house with a garden. There is land next to theirs where in time we will build our own little house with a garden. This neighborhood full of fellow Czechs is on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River (Czechs, 2010). Cleveland has so many Czechs I feel as though I have never left home. I feel as though I am living in my old village. We are able to attend Catholic church services here in our native language as there are so many Catholic Czechs here (Czechs,…

Immigrants are created through hardships, weather they be monetary, location based, or otherwise. They are a breed of people created through circumstance. This reigns true for a recent interviewee of mine from Chihuahua, Marianna. A girl only the age of 16 who, by definition, moved from her own country for permanent residence in the US. After an extensive (short) interviewing process I was than asked to compare either a personal story of immigration within my family or broadly relate the hardships of an old school mexican immigrant that goes by the handle of a “Bracero”. To that of the experiences of Marianna. Seeing as how I lack the one to one equivalence to relate to any form of an immigrant I will be comparing my dad's upbringing (or lack…

It is hard to be an immigrant or being the daughter of one. I still remember the day when my mom left me with my uncles to come to the United States, because on that day I acted as it was a regular day. I had a different perspective about my mom years ago, I used to call her “witch” because she always wanted me to my homework, have good grade at school; while my priority as a child was to have fun (play as a little child). When me and my family went to the airport to say goodbye to my mom, every thought I was going to cry, but I did not instead I said “finally.” I always regret myself for saying that, but I was a child whose priority was to play. After days and months I started to miss my mom, I was raised with my uncle; they were nice to me…

The day started off as any normal day. My mother woke me up and said “we must go.” Her voice sounded very urgent for what I thought was just a trip to the grocery store. My mom laid my outfit on my bed and packed by book bag; that’s when I figured out that I was starting school. I wasn’t entirely oblivious to the fact that I was going to familiarize myself with a completely different environment, but I just thought I had a little more time to prepare. Well, it turns out that I was wrong. You see, I wasn’t your average pre-schooler who was nervous about making friends. I was the immigrant child who had never spoken a word of English.…
