The Impact Of 9/11 On Human Development

In the readings for the last two weeks we have read about a variety of topics. The main point in the readings for 9/11 was that social work and social theory play a large part in individual’s lives. This is evidenced in Kondrat’s article with several theories being defined that give new insight to us as new social work students (2002). It was a main point that individuals are a product of their environment and will therefore react in ways that are affected by their environment and will in turn affect their environment. In Tregaskis’ article we learned about human development and how it was greatly impacted by Bronfenbrenner’s work throughout his lifetime (1995). His work in the human development has had a lasting and tremendous impact on the
way that social workers, along with countless other professions, have changed how they work with individuals.
In the readings and videos for 9/18 we learned about capitalism and how it affects human society in ways that I have previously never thought of. It was interesting to learn from a different perspective as this will be beneficial in our future careers. In our society, capitalism is, from my personal experience, seen as a good thing. It is an important social issue to point out that capitalism does tend to create terrible working conditions for the manual producers of our goods (The School of Life, 2015). This is something that is seen throughout our society where the rich can afford to pay others to do things that they deem beneath them or that they do not want to do. This leads to an issue of exploitation as individuals may have to do dangerous work in order to be able to provide for their families (The School of Life, 2014). This goes along with Weber’s theory that capitalism is the survival of the fittest (Weber, 2012).
