Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Physical appearance is something that all people are concerned about. It is often believed that females care more about their looks than the male population; however, recent studies show that both men and women give a lot of consideration and importance on good looks and attractiveness.
Psychology Today, a website featuring articles regarding psychology, entertains the idea of Uglytopia: a place wherein people need not care about their looks and personality is the most important thing to be considered in a person. It also discusses the dependence of people on attractiveness on first impressions and its effects on how they deal with or treat the person in question.
Over the time, a lot of definitions have been given to beauty. According to Saberi Roy (N.D.), a psychologist-writer-analyst, “Beauty can be attributed to everything that appeals to people’s senses and all objects that are compatible with people’s personal preferences. Beauty as perceived, is largely a projection of a person’s needs and beautiful objects or persons simply cater to his/her idealizations or fancies and reflect his/her natural need to relate to all that is appealing. Human beings are controlled by the senses and tend to repeat processes or experiences that appeal to the senses, that are harmonious and have structure and form. Beauty appeals to the sense of sight so there is a preference for repeating the experience of beauty.”
