During the 1930s, the United States went through the most tragic and terrifying economic downfalls in history known as the Great Depression, which lasted from 1929 to 1939. Americas 31st president, Herbert Hoover, allowed the country to fall into a complete state of depression with his very little concern of the major economic problems occurring at the time. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who took over as president after Hoover, was ready for action and attempted to bring America's citizens and economy out of the tragedy through many different social welfare programs known as the New Deal which was enacted from 1933 to 1938 in order to bring America out of the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a well-known major, devastating, financial…

No matter what happens, music is going to be popular around the world. Its beats are drilled into us like a file is programmed into a computer. In the 1930’s, Jazz and blues were in the prime of its fame, and the growth of the black society in music was increasing rapidly. People like Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, and many more were starting off legendary careers. On the other hand, the 20’s and 30’s were in a period of Prohibition, the national ban of alcohol. The majority of people opposed this law, therefore did what they can to find any beer or wine they could. Many of them went to nightclubs that secretly sold alcohol, called speakeasies, Not only did The…
Throughout this course, I’ve been introduced to and learned about many events in history. One topic in particular that fascinates me is the era of the 1920s, also known as the Jazz Age. Following World War I, a movement began in America which caused dramatic political and social changes. One of the major changes included a new genre of music. With inventions such as the radio, Americans had easier access to music. Jazz was born, and with the help of new technology, became popular throughout the country.…
Bebop jazz, which "slowly evolved from late swing and transition period jazz" (Jazz and the Beat Generation), was quite a shock to the white population when it first appeared on the scene during the Depression. This intricate compilation of sounds became the staple for all that was anti-commercial and as much a part of African-American roots as possible. The reason for such separation between blacks and whites when bebop became so popular is that white musicians were in it for the commercial success, seeing no other reason to play jazz but for financial gain and recognition. Blacks, on the other hand, turned bebop jazz into a personal expression devoid of as much materialistic impression as possible. This new attitude caused great dissent…

The Great Depression was an important event in United States history. It affected all Americans, and has a lasting legacy on our economy today. Prior to the Depression, in the 1920s, the United States had transformed from an economy based on the needs of World War I, to an economy based on what consumers wanted. With this transition, the U.S. began to produce more home appliances and electronics, rather than weapons and supplies. Because people were buying products, the stock market and the economy were able to grow and thrive.…
In the 1920’s Chicago, everything was run by the mob, most of the clubs, cabarets, speakeasies. The club scene in Chicago was HUGE, with literally hundreds of clubs in central hubs, such as Clark Street in the north, and also the black belt on the south side of chicago. Many of these clubs were of mixed races, whites and blacks were all together in the same establishments, and were hidden in alleyways. These clubs in chicago were known for the variety in music, illegal use of alcohol and were extremely well known for their crime. Country Blues singers and Classic blues singers were different by one huge thing.…
While these events changed the U.S. greatly. The Great Depression is the one event that changed the way everyone is the United States lived. Day to day lives were never the same, people were not the same. City people moved to farms to grow their own food for their families. Families who stayed in rural areas decreased their meals and children went around barefoot. Suicide rates rose to its highest levels in the nation’s history while birthrate decreased. As one labor leader recalled, communists “brought misery out of hiding” with their protests, unemployed councils, and sponsored marches.…
The birth of jazz music is often accredited to African Americans but both black and white Americans are responsible for its immerse rise in popularity. This type of music was performed using little to no words but with and enormous amount of trumpet, saxophone, and drum playing. Jazz often time had an upbeat tempo that one could dance to and also went along with other types of music such as be-bop or the blues. In comparison to what is known as white music, jazz is far more upbeat and allows for entertainers to have fun and be creative with dancing. Although jazz was created to be an outlet for African Americans to enjoy and be away from the rules of segregation, whites found themselves enjoying the soulful sounds of jazz music. Whites also used this as a time to sell alcohol which was not permitted during this era.…
