“Media 's the most powerful entity on earth" (Malcolm X). Media is capable to control facts. It influences anyone 's point of view. There are different types of media like print media, new age media and electronic media etc. electronic and new age mediums are famously used by teens these days. Tablets, iPods, laptops, iPhones are some latest gadgets that teenagers use but television is one medium that teens cannot eradicate on their daily habits. Television remains as one of the most powerful and influential mass medium of this generation. Everyone can operate televisions. Everything can be seen in it; drama, sports, comedy, entertainment, news and lifestyle. However, watching TV shows brings negative and positive effects on teen’s school performance, health and behavior, and relationship in the family.
Teenager’s school performance is affected by the shows they watch. Teenagers must know what to prioritize while studying. If entertainment was their main concern they miss practicing important skills like language, creativity, motor and social skills. Also, they decrease reading skills which is important for their studies (Comstock, 1991). They focus on what they watch and provide less time for homework. They might not hear clearly on classroom discussions due to the noise of watching television. On the other hand, some TV show may be a great help in understanding their lessons. Some students prefer learning visually through power point presentations and some documentation. There are shows that offer educational programs that improve the student’s academic performance. As future leaders of the society, teenagers will be aware and updated with current issues.
TV shows might be the cause of negative and positive health and behavior conditions of teenagers. Teens are emotional and one way of soothing their emotions is through watching drama shows. With that, they are exposed to shows that influence their habits and lifestyle. Teenagers might approve vulgar words, sex, violence and drugs valid in the society. A Philippine government agency called MTRCB (Movie and Television Review and Classification Board), campaigns for Strict Parental Guidance with the purpose of warning their children for sensitive scenes of every TV programs. Other than that, the health condition of teenagers made watching too much worst. According to the website KidsHealth, 8- to 18-year-olds spend, on average, four hours every day watching TV reducing the chance of involving in sports activities for exercise.
It increases the risk of cancer and other diseases. But some scientist approved watching entertainment TV programs can be as source of stress relieving to everyone. In addition, watching lifestyle shows can demonstrate some techniques in improving health habits.
Communication within the family is highly affected from watching too much television. Television is welcome in every home. Families highly patronize watching TV shows. It is a common entertainment that family enjoys. Sitting on the couch with the family plus a bucket of popcorn with everyone’s laughs and cries feels excellent. The family communicates and talks about the same programs. There are some programs that teach family lessons that generate a realization of what is the best for each member. It would engender a feeling of understanding, cooperating and loving one another. In contrast, watching TV shows causes less interaction between parent and child in some cases. Several teenagers might believe that rebelling and disrespecting family is applicable in life causing misunderstanding within the group.
Too much is not good but, watching TV shows has been a daily practice for teenagers. It is affordable, applicable and appealing. TV shows are to inform, entertain and educate and not to destroy one’s mentality and decisions. Teenagers are grown-ups but they are not fully- grown in making decisions for their actions. It is the parent’s duty to guide them in choosing the appropriate TV shows. Teen’s negative actions and behaviors shouldn’t blame the shows being watch. It is the teenager’s responsibility to choose from right and wrong. It depends on them how to use interpret what they see.

In “TV’s Negative Influence on Kids Reaffirmed” by Jeffery M. McCall, he claims that too much television is unhealthy for children. McCall states that children are more likely to be sexually active, violent, and socially impaired. The author claims that television not only negatively affects children, it also prevents children form doing productive activities such as doing homework, participating in sports, and reading. Even though all TV manufactures include v-chips in all televisions, McCall says that most families do not understand the system ratings that come with the v-chip. The author goes on to say that networks rate their own television programs and are not accurately labeling or rating their shows. McCall also argues that parents should…

Although reality TV is fascinating and full of drama, it still has an enormous effect on today’s youth. Throughout the years reality TV has become popular and it has attracted different age groups. But one group that reality TV attracts would be teens. Now I am not talking about all teens, but some teens do look at the actions of the television stars and think what they’re doing is “amazing”. When teenagers watch reality shows it opens their eyes to a lot of sex, vulgar language, and drugs. Allowing teens to be exposed to this much disapproval behavior is dangerous and can later bring problems later on in life. My best friend younger sister, who is fifteen, is starting to live the life of a reality star. She wakes up early for school, tired, from the previous night. She enjoys staying up all hours of the night just to be able to catch her favorite show, “The Bad Girls Club.” Wanting to be free, and doing whatever she feels like doing. Saying anything she wants to whomever, going out partying with all her friends, open to try drugs (weed), ready to try and have sex. At a young age she wants to do everything like these “bad girls” do. Is it healthy? No, going out every weekend and partying is making her tired. All this “freedom” that she’s getting is making her not want to study for school. But watching these reality shows isn’t healthy for a fifteen year old. According to Mullings “The impact of heavy television viewing and the effects it has on young viewers has been a dominant topic since the 1960s. With the ever-changing landscape of television programming, reality television has become increasingly popular, especially among the pre-teen and teen audiences” (Mullings)…

I agree that television shows influences our behaviors even without our knowledge of it. Although television seems like a great thing to have, it has many drawbacks. Television can have negative impacts on people, especially kids. People learn new skills by observing, then utilizing it, such as when we were kids and learn to walk by seeing our family walking around or learning a new subject in school. Therefore, when watching television it may influence our fundamental social dispositions; no matter if it is good or bad. Almost ninety nice percent of households possess one television. Television is today’s source of news, stories, legends, and characters from previous centuries; the reason why it is so influential. However, only “0.7 percent is used for public service announcements and news”(Sex, violence, profanity...). The other 97.3 % consists of television shows with violence, crime, advertisements and mainstream blandness. Many studies and research has been done to demonstrate that heavy television viewing may lead to serious health consequences. Perhaps one of the most controversial, if not then certainly the most contributive, media influences is television. According to a Nielsen study released in 2008, the average American household watches television eight hours a day (Semuels). If this is finding is true, it means that the average American family watches anywhere between fifty-six to sixty hours of television per week. With that being said, in a 2005 study conducted by Kjersten Oligney and Linda Klepacki on teen sexual behavior, it was determined that the average American teen watches only three hours of television a day (4). Regardless of how minimal the amount of hours appear, the overall impact of television on teens is still negative. In a special article published by Rolling Stone Magazine, teen-interest shows display the following subliminal messages about young people to viewers:…

The first reason why people shouldn’t watch too much television is because the content of many TV programs is not educational. Nowadays we can see movies, series, and shows that show violence, sex, and drugs. This has established wrong concepts among the people that influence them into having a negative behavior. Also, the impact TV has on children is worse because they grow up with the idea of a world where women must be slender and blonde to stand out, where problems can only be solved with money and violence, and where wars are inevitable.…

An individual child’s developmental level is a critical factor in determining whether the medium will have positive or negative effects. Not all television programs are bad, but data showing the negative effects of exposure to violence, inappropriate sexuality and offensive language are convincing (3). Still, physicians need to advocate continued research into the negative and positive effects of media on children and adolescents.…
