There were protests and riots in result to the busing and whites didn’t show up to school; Many parents left Boston so their kids could go to other schools. I thought Warriors Don’t Cry was a profoundly uplifting as well as a profoundly depressing account of the integration of Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. When the U.S. Supreme Court declared that school segregation was unconstitutional, Beals was a schoolgirl in Little Rock. She knew that the good school that would prepare her best for college was Central High in Little Rock, and she wanted to be in the first group of black teenagers to integrate the school. This memoir is based heavily on Beals’ diary and her English-teacher mother's notes. It explains how the 15-year-old Beals decided to integrate Central High with eight classmates and what happened as a result of that decision. Beals's narrative is uplifting because she survived the ordeal, went on to college at San Francisco State University and Columbia University, and eventually returned to Little Rock in 1987 to be greeted by then-governor Bill Clinton and a black Central High student-body president. The tale is depressing because unrelenting violence saturates most pages, making a reader ponder how humans can act with so much hatred toward one another. The fact that the violence and hate was aimed at children is particularly depressing. The violence and hate came from all angles--white classmates, their parents, Little Rock rednecks, and even the school's teachers. Even Arkansas governor Orval Faubus, encouraged the violence. The goal was to drive the nine black students away from Central High before they could graduate. President Eisenhower responded by calling in federal troops, turning Central High into an armed battleground. The sense of immediacy in Beals's well-crafted account makes the events seem like they happened yesterday. Eugene “Bull” Connor, Police Commissioner of Safety of Birmingham, Alabama, clearly failed in his own hate-driven campaign against desegregation. Coupled with this failure to extinguish a handful of peaceful protest marches, Bull Connor also failed to appropriate the South’s senselessly racist worldviews with that of the sensible reactionary precautions that would be more relatable to the mainstream media. Bull’s disregard for context and lacking desire to find a progressive solution to the problem exposed the weak-mindedness of those moderates in Birmingham calling for sympathy from the country. Subsequently, Eugene Connor became the catalyst for situational understanding in the region. The media’s freedom during these events allowed a narrative that reflected true human morality and the juxtaposition of tenured human beings with peaceful resistance training involved in positive civil rights reform and the dog-wielding, fire hose-wielding, power-wielding police force gave way for ethical reflection. Quite obviously, in hindsight, Eugene “Bull” Connor’s crusade on Birmingham’s weakest population seemed, to the national public, an atrocity conveying the true instability of desegregation. To characterize his response as anything but listlessly immoral would give credence to an unthinking way of living in which one’s own values have no basis in reality and therefore no respectable place in modern society. One could say Eugene “Bull” Connor was simply following the laws promoting segregation in his state and that that was just but, to the contrary, he was not. Eugene Connor and his police force weren’t even just in the eyes of the law. Eugene and the segregation laws he upheld were not protected by the Supreme Court. In the Brown v. In the 1950s the United States was very segregated even though there was no longer slavery the separation between the two races was still very great. In the south there were laws that did not allow for white and blacks to use the same accommodations, such as water fountains and restrooms in public places. Even though the North did not have these same laws it still suffered from de-facto segregation. For example, several new suburbs created in the 1950s were predominately white due to blacks not being able to afford to live there, resulting in the de-facto segregation. Therefore, White Americans continued to earn the superior jobs because they were attending exceptional schools and getting a higher level of education. The most powerful thing in the world is knowledge and even though African-Americans were allowed to attend school now the majority went to schools that weren’t funded well. As a result, African-Americans continued to receive an inferior education. For this reason, the movement began to use the “separate but equal” principle on their side. “Segregation did lifelong damage to black children, undermining their self-esteem,” argued Thurgood Marshall. For this reason, it was believed that African-American children felt as if they were unfit to associate with others.
