The Importance Of Distracted Driving
As technology advanced, it has become such a huge part of our life. In this past, year, the use of cell phone and other handheld devices have increased greatly. However, along with that number, the amount of distracted driving has also increased. Distracted driving is when a driver uses their cell phone while driving, whether they are texting, calling, or scrolling through social media. This is a dangerous habit that not only put the driver’s at risk, but also passengers in their car and other drivers on the road. Distracted driving is an activity that can take the driver’s eyes off the road and divert their attention to their electronic devices. In 2014, “ there were 520 non occupants killed in distraction- affected crashes”. Distracted driving not only affect the drivers but also innocent bystanders. “ At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phone or manipulating electronic devices while driving.” Texting and driving creates a risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted, drivers who use a hand-held device are more likely to get into accident harsh enough to injure themselves, and about half of all American teens say that they have been in a car with someone who used a cell phone and put people in danger. There are 14 states and the District of Columbia that prohibit talking on a hand-held cellphone while driving. 37 states and D.C restricted novice drivers from all cellphones use and 46 states and D.C banned text messaging for all drivers. Many states already have some sort of ban against distracted driving, so it's important to follow the law and prevent car accidents.
