The Importance Of Drought Conditions In Long Beach, California
Drought conditions in Long Beach, California, are regionally shared issues that policymakers and scientists are trying to address and mitigate within the 21st century. The Long Beach Water Department implemented the Conservation and Water Supply Shortage Plan as of November 3, 2005, to prevent supply shortages. Efforts to reduce water consumption in Long Beach has seen progress since inaction of the shortage plan, with 69.5 average daily gallons per resident being used to date (as of the month of July 2015) compared to 110 gallons per day average in the year 2010. To highlight water conservation progress since 2010, 40.5 average daily gallons per resident have been saved from previous levels of usage, indicating slow but ongoing decreased

Even though the Long Beach desalinization facility was not a success, it broke ground for a more efficient and productive plant in Carlsbad, California. For four years this drought has been destroying the state of California through wildfires and water shortages. Though many methods have been attempted to aid this state in its crisis, the drought is persistent. However, with advances in technology along with the new desalinization facility, the water consumption cut backs, landscaping changes, and new laws, California may have just what it needs to beat the drought and recover. California has taken an economic blow from this drought, and only time will tell whether or not desalinization will be California's…

Central Texas, especially Travis County, has been under drought conditions since La Niña, a weather pattern where the surface temperatures are cooler in the Pacific ocean, thus creating drier weather in the southern part of the United States, in 2011 (StateImpact, n.d.). Although this type of weather pattern is typically combated with the arrival of El Niño, which has the opposite effect, it failed to occur in winter of 2012 and central Texas was left with the driest conditions it has experienced since the lowest drought on record in the 1950s (StateImpact, n.d.). Couple this drought with the challenges that central…

With a population steadily growing at about 0.9% per year, California has the challenge of meeting energy demands while bringing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions down (PPIC 2013). California emits 359 metric tons of energy related carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere annually and is the second largest polluter behind Texas (EPA 2013). High GHG emissions change the climate, which is identified by rising water and air temperatures along with precipitation changes, sea level rise, and other indicators. These changes lead to the increased occurrence of extreme events such as: droughts, heat waves, wildfires, and floods. Higher temperatures cause more precipitation to fall as rain and less as snow, which for California diminish water reserves in the Sierra snowpack. These water reserves are especially important during times of severe drought, which California is…

When it comes to the topic of torture, most of us will readily agree that torturing someone in order to get information is not the answer. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how guilty a person is, and what should be done in the case of a bombing. On the one hand, people argue that torture is unconstitutional and should not be practiced because it questions a person’s morality and what they are willing to do in order to get results. On the other hand, however, others argue that we should allow torture because it is more just than allowing thousands of innocents to die because we didn’t want to question a single person. I have mixed feelings on the topic. While I recognize that our actions may be for the greater good, we cannot allow ourselves to lose our morality because of it. I do not believe that a person should be tortured for information unless it is under specific circumstances. What I mean by this is that people should not torture someone unless that person is obviously guilty or it is…

California is in a drought and farmers believe our only option is to take water from under the ground. But, groundwater depletion is causing a lot of bad things to happen. It is making the layer of clay above collapse, when the clay collapses the dirt above gives way and sinks. This sinking causes sinkholes and is very dangerous. The sinking also damages pipes, buckles walls of irrigation canals, and cracks homes. Although the sinking is already a big enough threat the water in general could be dangerous. In some cases groundwater becomes contaminated, this occurs when man-made products like gasoline, oil, road salts, and chemicals get into the groundwater and cause it to become dangerous for us to use. The state of California can prevent groundwater depletion by harvesting stormwater, reusing water, and seawater desalination.…

Natural phenomenon along with being very beautiful and useful for humankind, sometimes become very disastrous and demolishing for them. They show a negative side of nature and indicate some very demolishing aspects of nature, which the humans cannot ignore because of possessing less power. These incidents remind people that they do not have the control over everything and they are very small in front of such natural calamities. However, with strategic and wise planning one can reduce the severity of its effects but cannot save from them completely. Therefore, the areas that often face droughts should remain alert and stimulate their weather experts to continuously analyze weather conditions and give instructions of safety before its occurrence.…
