The Importance Of Drought In Maine
In Gray, Maine , a sudden drought takes toll on the local streams. Water levels are a foot lower than average, and the precipitation rate has been 8 to 9 inches lower than last year. This was quite a bit of water being absent from the Maine’s average main precipitation. Fortunately, there is a forecast of a substantial amount of rain. The amount of rain however, causes worries about flash flooding. Luckily, the amount of water should be small enough to be immersed by the vegetation. National Weather Service hydrologist Tom Hawley adds, “ A mature oak tree can transpire 100 gallons of water into the air every day, so I think the initial rainfall we get Thursday into Friday will initially go into the foliage.” Also, several local lakes have water levels well below normal. Current resident Catherine Elder says that she walked her dog around the Royal River everyday and has noticed a massive change between the water level since spring, saying that it is a foot lower. Although the mild drought affected many things, Hawley says it is fortunately not enough to begin having restricted water limits. …show more content…

In the article How Much Of California’s Drought Was Caused By Climate Change? Scientists Now Have The Answer, Katie Valentine provides studies from researchers who use data to calculate “how much of the current drought could be blamed on climate change” which ultimately led to the conclusion that a mixture of “steadily rising temperatures due to climate change, along with natural weather variability in California, led to more and more water evaporating from the soil.” Therefore, this illustrates that climate change does play a role because of the higher temperatures. Also from the study, researchers found that droughts like the one in California are becoming increasingly likely in many areas because of climate change — is one of the study’s most important conclusions.” Thus, mixture of problems between high water evaporation and high temperatures pinpoints the need to analyze the climate conditions further so California can be…

As a result of a three year drought Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan, the two main reservoirs for central Texas ' water supply, are at an all time low at just 35% full (Central Texas Sustainability Indicators Project, 2009). Storms in central Texas during July 2013 brought 2 to 4 inches of rain to the majority of the Texas hill country and as much as 8 inches in certain spots yet rain fall is significantly below the typical averages (StateImpact, n.d.). Currently, Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan hold 702,157 acre feet of water versus their capacity of 2.01 million acre feet. To this day, California has been in a drought. The governor, Jerry Brown is struggling to create policies to prevent people from using large amounts of water. He has made proposals to reduce the water use in California by building tunnels under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to increase the supply of water. One of the reasons California is in a drought is because of our history of dealing with the gold miners using hydraulic mining to mine gold, and damming the Tuolumne River to provide water for San Francisco. Although the use of of water has benefitted farmers and cities, it has not been in the best interest of the state because it has harmed the Native Americans and the environment.…

In the worst of times California’s climate is destructive to the well being of not only Californian’s quality of life, but the surrounding ecosystems. With unseasonably high temperatures presenting issues farther into the future, in “Adapting California's water management to climate change”, the authors Ellen Hanak and Jay Lund provide an overview of the effects California’s climate has during times of drought, and the complications it presents for the State's water management. Water management in the state oversees a plethora of concerns; properly planning, supply and delivery of water, quality assurance, addressing floods, the corresponding risks it presents, and the use of water as an energy source through hydropower. Larger governmental powers, like the State and Federal organizations, both have control over the above stated aspects of water management when dealing with California’s climate. The smaller, local, governmental bodies uphold the day to day operations of those systems. Best described by Hanak and Lund as “institutional diversity”, citing that the widespread sharing of responsibilities offers greater flexibility in response to unforeseen challenges each face, relying on the innovation of processes towards a wetter tomorrow. From the perspective of those in charge of the water management in the state,…

As most know today, California is currently in the midst of a drought that has been ongoing for four years. This epidemic has been getting worse and worse, which is a severe problem. Although being in a drought is surely an environmental issue, it is our responsibility to be mindful and cautious about it. According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, “People can also play a big role in drought. If we use too much water during times of normal rainfall, we might not have enough water when a drought happens.” Nobody…

Third, the drought in California causes the environment to change. Drought affects our environment in many different ways, both temporary and permanently. For the temporary impact, since plants and animals depend on water just like us, we may lose a lot of food supply. However, drought can impact our environment in the most serious way, and it will last very long even when the drought is over. The permanent impact that created by drought may include such as, loss of wetlands (moisture), wind and water erosion of soils, poor soil quality, migration of wildlife, and more wildfire (Drought in California). Even some of the effects are short-term damages, and the conditions will return to normal when the drought is completely over. However, the…

Two years ago, when I was in high school, our social science teacher told us there had a serious drought in Southern California. Most of us did not know anything about it and we felt so surprised about this new. Today, when I heard this new again, I can’t believe that the drought still exist in Southern California, I thought it already solved by the government because it had been two years when I heard this new. From most of my research, it said that it had been fourth year for California to have the drought. Water supply is no longer enough in California, our government was trying to think a best useful way to solve this problem. Some people think that desalination is a good solution because it cost less money and can also recycle the energy.…
