The Importance Of Elder Mitreatment
Lindsey, I agree with you whole heartedly that it is important for the elderly to have a support system. By having a support system, this allows for a decrease level in vulnerability. Having a lower risk of vulnerability makes the older adult less susceptible to elder mistreatment, which includes; abuse, neglect, and malnutrition. Elder mistreatment encompasses several risk factors, such as; sex, age, race, low socioeconomic status, low level of education, impaired functional or cognitive status, depression, and a history of domestic violence (Tabloski, 2010). As nurses, and any healthcare provider, it is viable that we are aware and assessing for any elder mistreatment.

In the nation, long-term care has become a major component of the budget, with national public expenditures totaling $58 billion in 1996 (Burwell, 1996).
