Giving in general is good for our overall wellness. Research has shown that it can increase both our mood and health. When giving to someone, even if that's just volunteering, rather than spending on personal life can give people a “Helper's High” which can make them happy. This sense of happiness and helpfulness can reduce stress (which is connected with health issues) and lead to a healthier and longer life. Specific research has even found giving to help with illnesses such as HIV and multiple sclerosis. Giving also creates a sense of connectedness that increases our social and community wellbing which are both necessary to …show more content…
have in everyday living. Giving and receiving gifts creates a communal sense of gratitude and thankfulness which are both linked to happiness.
2. What happens when a person doesn't live in a "good" neighborhood? What ideas do you have for making neighborhoods better? Provide 3 ideas.
When a person doesn’t live in a good neighborhood can be negatively affected in areas such as health, general norms, personal outcomes and futures.
People who live in a poor community that is infested with pollution are clearly exposed to something that can be detrimental to their health. Violent locations can lead to injuries of innocent people. Neighbors can influence personal behavior and change a person's perspective on general norms. If the people around you set a bad example with things as extreme as violence and crime or as small as cursing your overall sense of what is okay is altered and in general is lowered. Parenting styles can be influenced by the people around you as well and if they are negative you could potentially negatively affect your children. Futures of children who grow up in these poor conditions are more likely to quit important things such as jobs and school if they see other round them doing the same as they grow …show more content…
up.
Here are some ideas on how we can make neighborhoods better:
1) Neighborhoods should create general standards and a committee that helps uphold those standards so that it is a family friendly and healthy community. This can apply to general cleanliness policies such as litter control and house upkeep. Things such a recycling, trash, and green waste disposals should be easily accessible to limit pollution.
2)Help locations should be made easily accessible to these communities. By this I mean things such as rehab facilities and support groups for people who have been harmed. These centers will help improve individuals with problems and help make the people affected by these harms feel more secure.
3)More businesses should be created that help people get and maintain a job. By making work available to more people we create a neighborhood with good working role models who are able to afford the upkeep of homes.
3. How is community wellbeing as defined in the Gallup book chapter related to the four other elements of wellbeing (Career, Social, Financial, and Physical). Provide three examples of these overlaps/relationships.
In the Gallup book it states that “ Community wellbeing is interconnected with, and builds directly on, the other four elements” which are career, social, financial, and physical wellbeing.
For Example people with great career wellbeing who are happily engaged in their job are 20-30% more likely to give back to their community to make it a better place. The book also talks about if you join certain things that involve helping your community with your friends you are more likely to continue that activity. That is where social and community well being are related. Social wellbeing can also help create a healthier with positive group peer pressure with groups such as Weight Watchers and Alcoholics Anonymous. Community well being also corresponds with financial wellbing in that being in the right community can help with overspending and living below your
means.
4. Bonus*** Worth 5 extra points. Before I die, I want to....
Befor I die I want to spend time living off the grid spending time in nature focusing on improving myself and helping others. It has always been a dream of mine to get away from the social worries of technology and get into life. I think if I went somewhere where these things weren't available to me in a time where I wasn’t worried about other things happening back home or money I could really benefit from an experience like this. I would save up to money so that I didn't have to work while I was there so I could spend my time volunteering working out and discovering who I am inside.
