According to the Constitution of the United States, all the citizens of the United States have the right to mention God. The government mentions God a lot. God is mentioned during the Pledge of Allegiance, during prayers to start government meetings, and when the president is sworn in to become a president. This shows that we don’t have to make it illegal to mention God because the Constitution mentions God, and they have that right.
Courts have said that the Pledge of Allegiance has nothing to do with religion, it is an oath of loyalty to the United States. In the United States, it is just customary for people to say “so help me God” at the end of an oath. …show more content…
This is what people have been doing for many years. If people want to change this custom, it must be voted on. This proves that mentioning God should not be illegal because it is a loyal, and customary way in the United States.
In 1984, the Supreme Court stated that because the words ”under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance have been said so many times that it has lost its meaning and therefore does not violate the first amendment.
When the Pledge of Allegiance was first written, it did not include the words “under God”. However, Congress added these words to separate the United States from the Soviet Union. This shows that the Congress added the words “under God” for a purpose, not to go against the first amendment.
To conclude, I think that we shouldn’t make it illegal to mention God. We have the right to any kind of religion or to no religion, according to the first amendment. The Congress added the words “under God” and “so help me God” for a purpose. These phrases have been used for many years and it can not be changed unless we vote for that to change. The government uses the word “God” for many purposes. They have been for over 100 years, and if they want to do that, they have the
right.
